The opportunity We currently have an opportunity for an Underwriting Consultant to join our Contract Surety team based remotely in California. This role is responsible for underwriting the most complex and specialty contract surety risks, with the highest level of delegated authority. The Underwriting Consultant develops and executes strategic initiatives to drive growth and profitability, manages large accounts, and serves as a senior technical resource and mentor within the Surety team. Some of the Underwriting Consultant responsibilities include but are not limited to:

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience in Business, Finance, Accounting, or related field.
  • 7–10 years of progressively complex underwriting experience in contract surety.
  • Advanced understanding of contractor financials and construction risk.

Nice To Haves

  • Professional designation preferred (AFSB, CPCU).

Responsibilities

  • Underwrite new and renewal contract surety submissions for complex accounts, leveraging advanced financial, legal, and risk analysis.
  • Make independent decisions within the highest authority levels, ensuring compliance with underwriting strategy and state laws.
  • Manage a profitable book of contract surety business, including portfolio reviews and documentation of underwriting decisions.
  • Develop and maintain strong relationships with brokers, producers, and contractors.
  • Lead strategic initiatives to identify market opportunities and agency planning.
  • Serve as a technical expert and mentor for junior underwriters.
