Position Overview: The Underwriting Assistant supports the Casualty Underwriting Team in the processing and administration of casualty business (including general liability, products liability, commercial auto, umbrella/excess, etc.). The role involves assisting underwriters in all phases of the underwriting process, ensuring timely and accurate completion of administrative tasks, and maintaining exceptional client and broker relations.

Requirements

  • Post-secondary education, preferably in business, insurance, or a related field.
  • 1-2 years’ experience in an insurance brokerage, agency, or underwriting support role preferred.
  • Knowledge of casualty (liability) insurance principles and products an asset.
  • Strong computer skills, including proficiency with MS Office and ability to learn industry management systems (e.g., Guidewire, TAM, Policy Works).
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to prioritize tasks and manage time efficiently in a fast-paced environment.
  • Customer service-oriented mindset with a team player attitude.

Nice To Haves

  • Progress toward or completion of CIP or CAIB designation is an asset.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare, process, and review new and renewal business, endorsements, quotes, binders, and policy documentation for casualty insurance products.
  • Input and maintain accurate policy data in underwriting and company management systems.
  • Assist with gathering, analyzing, and organizing underwriting information from brokers, clients, and other sources.
  • Conduct preliminary review of submissions to identify missing information and coordinate with brokers for follow-up.
  • Generate correspondence, reports, and other documentation as required by the underwriting team.
  • Track workflow and outstanding items to ensure prompt turnaround and compliance with service standards.
  • Support the preparation and delivery of proposals and presentations to brokers and clients.
  • Maintain and update policy files (physical and electronic) to ensure accuracy and compliance with company recordkeeping guidelines.
  • Respond to internal and external inquiries in a professional and timely manner.
  • Perform general administrative duties including scheduling appointments, organizing meetings, and maintaining records.
  • Collaborate with underwriting, claims, and other departments as required.
  • Participate in continuous improvement initiatives and professional development activities.
