Growing together The Underwriter will develop comparative benefit packages, review claim experience, and apply underwriting guidelines to prepare renewal and/or prospective rates. This individual will support Sales and Account Management in completing group experience retention illustrations and address questions on request for proposals. The Underwriter will analyze health benefit plan characteristics and assess risks around loss of clients. They will also utilize underwriting criteria and policies to provide proper rating methodologies. This individual will provide technical subject matter expertise to the sales staff and district offices on new health care proposals. The Underwriter will use established underwriting criteria and rating methodologies to analyze risk and financial data in order to appropriately price new and renewing group health insurance policies. The Underwriter will follow all applicable Small Business group regulations and work in support of UnitedHealthcare’s business goals. The Underwriter will collaborate with the local sales team to develop talking points and sales strategies to be used with the customer and broker. Rate negotiation and benefit plan options will also be discussed and modified to optimize retention, growth, and profit. This individual will build and maintain models to assist in the review and forecast of market financials and growth. A Small Business Underwriter will have many opportunities to be involved in data analysis and reporting projects. The Underwriter will be instrumental in managing and attaining market specific financial goals. This position follows a hybrid schedule with four in-office days per week. Requirements

  • Intermediate level of proficiency with MS Office suite (including Excel, PowerPoint, and Word)
  • Ability to work in-person at the Minnetonka, MN office four days a week

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Math, Finance, Business or related degree
  • Experience in underwriting
  • Proven excellent communication skills, both orally and in writing

Responsibilities

  • Develop rates and apply them across the book of business to meet financial results
  • Manage the health plan renewal process for the assigned segments and markets
  • Discuss case-specific strategy with the health plan
  • Process requests for renewal reviews or appeals
  • Provide new business pricing
  • Complete ad-hoc projects and reporting
  • Provide explanation and interpretations within area of expertise
