About The Position

At Church Mutual, we are dedicated to protecting those who serve and inspire others through our specialized insurance expertise and innovative solutions. As an Underwriter I, you will analyze insurance submissions, recognize exposures, provide coverage alternatives, and offer risk management suggestions while adequately pricing insurance coverage on accounts of small to medium size and low complexity within company underwriting guidelines. You will develop knowledge of insurance issues, products, trends in the market, and pricing principles, while fostering positive business relationships with internal and external customers.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree is strongly preferred or equivalent experience in underwriting.
  • Typically requires 3+ years of relevant experience in property and casualty insurance underwriting.
  • Knowledge of underwriting function, insurance coverages, and principles.
  • Ability to identify and analyze exposures and develop appropriate solutions.
  • Demonstrated decision-making ability within binding authority.
  • Solid organizational skills and commitment to personal improvement.
  • Ability to communicate professionally and respectfully with others.
  • Ability to learn CM Group computer systems and stay current with changes.
  • Ability to work effectively in a team environment.

Nice To Haves

  • Associate in Underwriting designation or completion of two CPCU courses may be considered in lieu of a degree.
  • Experience with property and casualty insurance companies.

Responsibilities

  • Analyze insurance submissions within established binding authority.
  • Provide coverage alternatives and risk management suggestions.
  • Price insurance coverage on small to medium size accounts.
  • Review account characteristics and take appropriate action to meet corporate goals.
  • Negotiate solutions while keeping the customer in mind.
  • Communicate with supervisor on issues exceeding binding authority.
  • Develop and maintain effective business relationships with the sales force.
  • Research and disseminate information to help service customers.
  • Develop underwriting knowledge through awareness of changes within the Underwriting Department.
  • Focus on meeting customer expectations and department timeliness.
