About The Position

As an Underwriter I, you'll review individual risks for assigned programs, analyze data, and determine underwriting acceptability under the guidance of supervisors. You'll also handle policy data entry, routine maintenance, and support the underwriting team with special projects. This is a hybrid role following an initial in-office training period of up to 6 months. Once training is complete, you'll typically work 2-3 days in the office per week with flexibility for remote days. Please note: This is an entry-level underwriting position. As part of your onboarding, you'll complete a structured 12-week training course to build your knowledge of underwriting basics and set you up for long-term success and advancement within the department.

Requirements

  • Associate degree minimum; Bachelor's degree preferred
  • 2+ years of business experience (can include administrative, analytical, or customer-facing roles)
  • Strong organizational and communication skills (oral and written)
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Excel and other Microsoft Office programs
  • Comfort with speaking in group settings and presenting information

Nice To Haves

  • Prior insurance or underwriting experience
  • Experience in data analysis, risk evaluation, or analytical coursework/training

Responsibilities

  • Review new and renewal business to determine acceptability, quality, and profitability within authority levels.
  • Approve, refer, or reject risks based on company and carrier guidelines.
  • Market, support, and promote underwriting policies and objectives to agents, board members, and clients.
  • Provide timely, courteous, and efficient service to internal teams and external stakeholders.
  • Perform data entry and updates in policy management systems (Visions, iCE), including policyholder information, class codes, and First Reports of Injuries (FROI).
  • Generate and review reports for policy renewals, audits, and client requests.
  • Communicate effectively with carriers, brokers, account managers, claim adjusters, and client service staff.
  • Assist with special projects and client presentations as needed.
