About The Position
The Underwriting Consultant at Unum plays a critical role in the evaluation, selection, and retention of profitable business within assigned authority limits. This position requires a deep understanding of risk assessment and the ability to partner effectively with sales teams, brokers, and internal stakeholders. The Underwriting Consultant will not only be responsible for assessing risks but will also contribute to the training and development of junior underwriters, fostering a culture of mentorship and technical growth within the team. The incumbent will lead initiatives that support change and drive profitable results, ensuring that the organization meets its business objectives while maintaining high standards of service and quality. In this role, the Underwriting Consultant will consult with sales and service partners to identify the best products and plan options for customers. They will conduct thorough risk assessments to ensure that new cases are acquired profitably and that existing cases are retained effectively. The consultant will analyze risk trends and make recommendations for improvement, contributing to the development of policies and procedures that support product initiatives. Mastery of the company's product portfolio and a strong understanding of market influences are essential for success in this position. The Underwriting Consultant will also be expected to deliver accurate and timely service, maintaining strong relationships with both internal and external partners. They will act as a technical resource for junior underwriters, providing feedback and guidance on case-level decisions. This role requires excellent communication skills, strong organizational abilities, and a commitment to quality and personal ownership of results.
