About The Position

The Underwater Acoustics Analyst at the Applied Research Laboratories focuses on advanced signal processing and analysis techniques for SONAR data, collaborating with US Navy personnel to develop mission-critical tools. The role involves exploring underwater acoustics, developing mathematical algorithms, and modeling SONAR array performance in complex environments.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Physics, Mathematics, Computer Science or related discipline.
  • Experience developing, testing, version control and documentation of scientific programs in MATLAB or similar programming language.
  • Interest in acoustic data processing and analysis, underwater acoustics, and SONAR system design and evaluation.
  • Attention to detail, effective problem solving, sound engineering judgment, good communication skills, and the ability to use time effectively to meet deadlines.
  • US Citizen with eligibility for access to classified information.

Nice To Haves

  • Advanced degree in Engineering, Physics, Mathematics, or related discipline.
  • Three or more years of work experience working with acoustic or environmental data.
  • Current or recent US security clearance.
  • Demonstrated experience developing research-grade tools in MATLAB, Python, C++, and/or Java.
  • Experience applying software engineering principles of modularity, maintainability, testability, usability, etc., in software design and development.
  • Background/experience in acoustic propagation modeling, geoacoustic inversion techniques, or SONAR system analysis.
  • Experience working in both Windows and Linux environments.
  • Experience summarizing analysis results in technical report and PowerPoint and presenting research results.
  • Proven ability to work independently, formulate research plans, and take initiative.
  • Demonstrated excellent interpersonal communication skills.
  • Cumulative GPA of 3.0 with a GPA of 3.2 in relevant coursework.

Responsibilities

  • Implement research grade software and signal processing tools related to SONAR array processing, environmental and SONAR sensor modeling, and development of other acoustic analysis tools.
  • Process and analyze acoustic array data for developing, testing, and evaluating SONAR systems.
  • Determine project requirements and desired results, and develop analysis plans that meet the expressed requirements and achieve sponsor goals.
  • Prepare, review, and present to the internal team analysis presentations and reports.
  • Travel to external locations to present analysis results at external working group meetings.
  • Collaborate with and participate in dynamic, multi-functional teams in support of specific program objectives.
  • Other related functions as assigned.
