About The Position

The City of Tallahassee is seeking candidates for the position of Underground Utilities Technician, which has three levels: I, II, and III. This role involves manual labor and technical work in the construction, operation, and maintenance of water distribution and wastewater collection systems. The position is designed to provide the necessary knowledge, skills, and experience for licensure in wastewater collections or water distribution, with opportunities for progression through the levels based on experience and training. The work is performed under supervision, with increasing complexity and responsibility as the technician advances through the levels. Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent recognized certificate.
  • Valid Class E State driver's license at the time of appointment.
  • Obtain a commercial learner's permit (CLP) within three months of appointment.
  • Obtain a Class 'A' State Commercial Driver's License (CDL) within nine months of appointment.
  • For Technician I, obtain Florida Water and Pollution Control Operator's Association (FW&PCOA) Class 'C' Collections Certification or Florida Department of Environmental Protection (FL DEP) Level 'III' Distribution License within 24 months of hire.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in utility construction and/or operation of utility construction related equipment.
  • Certifications in Maintenance of Traffic, Confined Space, Excavation and Trenching for Technician II and III levels.
  • Entry level water and sewer certifications or advanced certifications for Technician III.

Responsibilities

  • Perform manual labor in the construction, operation, and maintenance of water distribution and wastewater collection systems.
  • Assist in learning the technical skills required for licensure in wastewater collections or water distribution.
  • Work under direct supervision and gradually take on more complex tasks as training progresses.
  • Exercise independent judgment in dealing with individual customers at higher levels.
  • Operate specialized or complex equipment as required at higher levels.
