About The Position

The Underground Maintenance Supervisor is responsible for the safe, efficient, and reliable execution of all underground mobile and surface maintenance activities. This role ensures that planned and unplanned work is carried out to a high standard, supporting production targets while upholding strict safety, environmental, and regulatory requirements. The supervisor provides leadership, direction, and mentoring to maintenance crews, fostering a strong safety culture and continuous improvement in performance.

Requirements

  • Minimum 5–7 years in underground mobile equipment maintenance, with at least 2 years in a supervisory or lead role.
  • Strong knowledge of Sandvik, Caterpillar, Komatsu, Normet, and other underground equipment.
  • Proven experience with computerized maintenance management systems (CMMS).
  • Demonstrated ability to lead teams in a safety-critical, production-driven environment.
  • Strong communication, organizational, and problem-solving skills
  • Driver’s license or ability to competently operate a motor vehicle.

Responsibilities

  • Enforce and model compliance with all company safety policies, MSHA regulations, and environmental standards.
  • Ensure Job Hazard Analyses (JHAs), lock-out/tag-out (LOTO), barricade policies, and other critical controls are followed.
  • Lead incident investigations, root cause analysis, and corrective actions.
  • Supervise daily maintenance activities for underground equipment (loaders, trucks, jumbos, drills, utility vehicles, loaders, haul trucks, etc.).
  • Coordinate planned preventative maintenance (PM), corrective repairs, and major component change-outs.
  • Ensure PMs, work orders, and inspections are completed accurately, reviewed, and entered into the maintenance system.
  • Collaborate with planners, reliability engineers, and operations to schedule work effectively.
  • Prioritize work based on production needs and equipment condition.
  • Manage parts, tooling, and contractor resources to minimize downtime.
  • Provide leadership, mentoring, and technical guidance to mechanics, electricians, and apprentices.
  • Conduct performance evaluations and support technician progression through skill/tech levels.
  • Monitor equipment reliability and performance; escalate recurring issues to reliability/engineering teams.
  • Support cost control by managing labor hours, overtime, and parts usage.
  • Identify and implement improvements in work practices, tooling, and maintenance procedures.
  • Excellent and demonstrated commitment to safety & health, interacting with maintenance personnel to ensure activities are completed without compromise to the safety and health of all personnel.
  • Reduce TRI (total recordable injuries) by 15% (including contractors) from previous year.
  • Focus on “visible felt leadership” spending at minimum 80% of time interacting with the technicians and contractors.
  • Ensure key performance measures are actively reviewed with the technicians targeting the fleet availability.
  • Positive and enthusiastic team member, seeking to assist and mentor others.
  • Rigorous and thorough management for completing scheduled activities to minimize the production impact of the equipment being down for maintenance activities.
  • Actively and constructively communicate opportunities for improvement / development to technicians consistently updating individuals as to their current job performance.
  • Maintain rigorous housekeeping habits of all maintenance shop facilities.
  • Maintain daily maintenance shift reports, area inspections, payroll records, planned general inspections, dispatch reporting data and employee evaluations.
  • Maintain good working relationships with key vendors / manufacturers such as Sandvik, Normet, Blanchard (Cat), Fastenal etc.
  • Provide technical support and training to the heavy repair technicians.
