About The Position

Penta is a growing telecommunications contractor, providing complete turn-key engineering and project management services for any network communications construction project. We are seeking a skilled and detail-oriented Construction Field Inspector to oversee directional drilling and underground utility installation projects. The Field Inspector will ensure all work performed by contractors and internal crews meets project specifications, safety standards, and regulatory requirements. This position involves daily site visits, quality control inspections, documentation, and coordination with project management, engineering, and client representatives. The ideal candidate will have experience with horizontal directional drilling (HDD), fiber or conduit installations, and DOT/public right-of-way construction practices. Location: Based in Rahway, NJ (travel required throughout NJ, PA, and surrounding areas)

Requirements

  • 3+ years of experience in construction inspection or field supervision for underground utility, HDD, or civil infrastructure projects.
  • Knowledge of directional drilling operations, utility installation standards, and restoration practices.
  • Familiarity with DOT, municipal, and environmental regulations governing right-of-way construction.
  • Ability to read and interpret construction drawings, permits, and specifications.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and digital inspection/reporting tools (e.g., Fieldwire, SiteDocs, Fulcrum, or similar).
  • Excellent communication and documentation skills.
  • Valid driver’s license and ability to travel daily to multiple job sites.

Nice To Haves

  • OSHA 10 or 30 certification preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Perform daily field inspections of directional drilling, trenching, and conduit installation activities to verify compliance with project plans, permits, and specifications.
  • Monitor construction methods, materials, and workmanship for adherence to standards and quality expectations.
  • Review and confirm underground utility locates, bore paths, and as-built documentation.
  • Observe safety practices and ensure compliance with OSHA and company safety policies.
  • Document daily construction progress, site conditions, quantities installed, and any deviations or issues encountered.
  • Communicate findings, deficiencies, and recommended corrective actions to project management and contractors.
  • Coordinate with local municipalities, utility owners, and permitting agencies as needed.
  • Verify restoration, traffic control, and final site cleanup meet all project and jurisdictional requirements.
  • Support the closeout process by reviewing redlines, as-builts, photos, and punch list items.
  • Travel regularly to job sites across New Jersey and nearby states (PA, DE, NY); occasional overnight travel may be required.
