About The Position

AUI Inc. (AUI Power) is seeking a skilled, self-motivated, and dependable team player to join our AUI Power as an Underground Apprentice. This role is ideal for individuals who take pride in physical, hands-on work and want to end each day knowing they contributed to essential infrastructure. Position Summary: The Underground Apprentice will work with, and train alongside experienced crew members to support electrical underground power distribution systems throughout the DC metropolitan area.

Requirements

  • 2 Years’ experience in the utility industry
  • 3 Years’ experience operating equipment and power tools
  • Must have a current, valid driver's license with the ability to obtain a Class A CDL within 6 months
  • High School diploma or GED
  • Work 40+ hours per week to include during inclement weather, holidays, and/or weekends as needed
  • Willing to work overtime, travel long distances on short notice for storm and/or emergency events as needed
  • Must be able to lift 50 lbs. on a regular basis
  • Possess a working knowledge of construction practices
  • Must successfully complete a criminal background check and drug screen

Responsibilities

  • Participate in AUI’s state approved apprenticeship program
  • Assist with the installation, construction, and repair of underground electrical systems by installing primary cables, secondary cables, and transformers
  • Operate and perform job functions in a confined space environment such as manholes, vaults, and splice boxes
  • Assist in locating trouble spots (cable splicing) using fault finding test equipment and taking necessary measures to identify and correct problems
  • Run underground services using heavy equipment and power tools
  • Perform hand digging
  • Remove, relocate, and backfill soil and debris using shovels, rakes, and related tools
  • Learn to operate power-driven machinery such as jackhammer, tamper, & drills
  • Know proper handling, storage and transporting of conduits, wire, pipe and materials
  • Know and follow safety rules, practices, and regulations
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work zone in high-traffic pedestrian areas (city environments)
  • Clean and maintain equipment, trucks, and tools
  • Site cleanup
