About The Position

The diagnostic sonographer utilizes high frequency sound waves and other diagnostic techniques for medical diagnosis.

Requirements

  • High school diploma with additional skills training (certification).
  • RVT within 3 years.
  • Minimum of three months (RDMS).

Responsibilities

  • Performs the scanning examination requested by the referring physician, modifying the examination, depending on the findings demonstrated, and review the examination with the supervising radiologist.
  • Assists the radiologist or the clinician in special procedures such as percutaneous fluid aspiration or biopsy procedures.
  • Performs routine equipment checks for resolution and other quality control procedures, as necessary.
  • Must be able to react quickly to emergency situations such as patient fainting, patient being unsteady while getting on to scanning table, if unsafe situation occurs (such as a fire), getting patient to safety and sounding alarm. Ability to work alone on shift or call and get job done in an efficient manner.
  • Must be able to lift, push, reach, bend, stop and walk in order to care for patients. Must be able to perform a stand‐pivot transfer with a patient.
  • Meets with and keeps Radiology Manager informed of needs, activities, and problems within ultrasound department.
  • Orders, charges and schedules patients in RIS system.
  • Verifies images of exam and sends to PACS.
  • Maintains an inventory of coupling agent, drugs and other supplies and requisitions and materials, as needed.
  • Obtains sterile instruments, as needed, and returns them to central supply for sterilization and storage.
  • Teaches ultrasound technique to student technologists.
  • Complies with established procedures and policies.
  • Demonstrates willingness to accept non‐routine work assignments, as appropriate, such as cover in Diagnostic Radiology when needed.
  • Must be able to work a variety of shifts and be in the call rotation on a scheduled basis.
  • Able to be on call and in the department within 45 minutes after being called in for a procedure.
  • Must be able to sit or stand for a prolonged period of time in performing the ordered examination (usually 30‐60 minutes for each patient).
  • Performs high level disinfection process according to policy/procedures.
