About The Position

The Ultrasonographer is responsible for using diagnostic medical equipment to diagnose various medical conditions. Sonography , or ultrasonography, is the use of sound waves to generate an image for assessment and diagnosis. The Ultrasonographer may specialize in obstetric/gynecol ogic, abdominal, neurosonography or breast sonography .

Requirements

  • Associate’s or bachelor’s degree in sonography from an accredited s c hool.
  • Current RDMS (Registered Diagnostic Medical Sonographer) Certificatio n
  • Current CPR certification
  • Minimum of one y ears of experience working as a certified Ultrasonographer
  • Reasoning Ability Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
  • Computer Skills To perform this job successfully, an individual should have thorough knowledge in computer information systems.

Responsibilities

  • Reviews patient’s medical history and physician’s instructions.
  • Prepares equipment for procedure.
  • Selects appropriate equipment settings.
  • Explains procedure to patient and records any medical history that may be relevant to the condition being viewed.
  • Directs the patient to move into positions that will provide the best view.
  • Spreads gel on the skin to aid in the transmission of sound waves .
  • Operate s special equipment to direct nonionizing, high-frequency sound waves into areas of the patient’s body.
  • The equipment collects reflected echoes and forms an image that may be videotaped, transmitted, or photographed for interpretation and diagnosis by a physician.
  • Views the screen during the scan, looking for visual cues that contrast healthy areas with unhealthy ones.
  • Selects images to show the physician for diagnostic purposes.
  • Takes measurements, calculates values, and analyzes the results in a preliminary report for the physicians.
  • Keeps patient records and adjusts/maintains equipment.
  • Complies with safety, infection control, and quality improvement policies/procedures.
  • P erforms other duties as assigned.
