Job Summary: Performs ultrasonic diagnostic procedures in accordance with accepted protocols as directed by physicians. Produces images of internal body tissues in order to diagnose and monitor a variety of conditions such as heart disease, pregnancy and cancer. Supervises and mentors ultrasound personnel. Maintains equipment.

Requirements

  • Diploma/certificate from an Ultrasound college/school: Required
  • ACR Accredited Sites: All sonographers must be certified and currently registered in at least two (2) of the following: American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonography (ARDMS) certification in Abdomen (AB), Obstetrics (OB) or Vascular (RVT); or Cardiovascular Credentialing International Registered Vascular Specialist (CCI-RVS); or Registered by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) in Sonography (S) or (VS): Required: Required in OR
  • Oregon Board of Medical Imaging (OBMI) Sonography License: Required in OR
  • Basic Life Support (BLS OR HS-BLS OR RQIBLS) certification: Required
  • Oregon Board Sonographer license (OR-SNG): Required
  • American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography (ARDMS) or CCI Registered Vascular Specialist (CCI RVS) or ARRT-Vascular Sonography (ARRT-VS) or ARRT-Sonography (ARRT-S): Required

Responsibilities

  • Uses ultrasound equipment to direct high-frequency sound waves to a prescribed area of the patient’s body and capture quality images that describe the composition, shape and motion of tissues, organs, vessels and pathology.
  • Summarizes, documents, verifies and presents images, findings, calculations and measurements to physicians for diagnoses.
  • Adheres to ultrasonic diagnostic procedures, precautions and standards.
  • Provides direct patient care, including assessing patient condition and ability to cooperate.
  • Positions patients and equipment, prepares patients for procedures and continually monitors and records vital signs.
  • Observes for reactions and signs of impending complications and intervening as needed.
  • Maintains accurate records, files and billing information.
  • Ensures the integrity of patient medical images and data while adhering to Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) and other patient confidentiality guidelines and regulations.
  • Prepares rooms and patients for subsequent ultrasound procedures.
  • Verifies operational status of equipment prior to daily utilization.
  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned.
