About The Position

The Ultrasound Technologist performs ultrasound procedures and related techniques to produce images for interpretation by a licensed independent practitioner. This role may involve learning to scan vascular exams, such as venous duplex scans, and requires providing direct patient care in a compassionate and timely manner. Under the direction of Radiology leadership, the technologist performs various technical procedures using ultrasound for disease diagnosis or pathology. Key responsibilities include evaluating patients, verifying identification, explaining procedures, obtaining patient history and consent, and ensuring patient comfort, privacy, and safety. The technologist monitors patient conditions and medical equipment, documents sonographer's impressions, relays findings to physicians, and obtains/records images demonstrating normal and pathological findings. Documentation of pertinent information like lab values and patient histories is essential. The role also requires maintaining clinical competency across various patient age groups (newborn, pediatric, adolescent, adult, geriatric), participating in performance improvement projects, assisting with federal, state, and local agency audits, and contributing to the education of students and orientation of new staff. High-level disinfection of probes according to Joint Commission standards is mandatory, as is the use of diverse ultrasound modalities and proficiency in cross-sectional anatomy and related technology. The technologist is expected to demonstrate favorable guest relations and uphold the hospital's values.

Requirements

  • Graduate of an ultrasonography program
  • American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (ARDMS) or Sonographer by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) registry eligible
  • Certification/Registration with ARRT (American Registry of Radiologic Technologists) or the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (ARDMS)

  • Associates, America Medical Association (AMA) allied health training program in Ultrasound
  • Advanced modality registration in Ultrasound Technology by one of the following: American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (ARDMS), or Sonographer by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) (must obtain within 2 years if not already held)
  • 1 year experience as an Ultrasound Tech

Responsibilities

  • Demonstrates knowledge of direct patient care by evaluating the patient, verifying patient ID, and related information to assure appropriate procedure is performed
  • Explains procedure to patient; prepares patient for procedure by obtaining and recording patient history and consent form (if applicable)
  • Ensures patient comfort, privacy, and safety during procedure; monitors condition of patient and medical equipment that may be disturbed due to the nature of exam and report changes to patient care services
  • Documents sonographer's impressions and relays findings to physician
  • Obtains and records images necessary to demonstrate normal and pathological findings; documents all pertinent information, e.g., lab values, patient histories; demonstrates and maintains clinical competency particularly related to patients who are: newborn, pediatric, adolescent, adult and geriatric as deemed necessary by designated facility
  • Participates in performance improvement projects
  • Assists department in achieving successful results in all federal and state and local agency audits
  • Participates in the education/instruction of students and the orientation of new staff
  • Performs high level disinfection of probes per joint commission standards
  • Uses various ultrasound modalities dependent on the type of anatomy being examined
  • Becomes proficient in recognizing cross-sectional anatomy and understanding of related technology
  • Demonstrates favorable guest relations and continues to promote values of the hospital in daily work performance
  • May also perform other related patient care duties
