About The Position

The Sonographer/Ultrasound I-IV performs ultrasound procedures on patients for the purpose of diagnosis and/or treatment. This position is part-time and requires working weekend shifts at John Peter Smith Hospital.

Requirements

  • Associate degree in Sonography or a related field, certification from a CAAHEP accredited Ultrasound school, American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) approved educational program accredited by JRCERT, or equivalent.
  • Current Registration with the American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography (ARDMS) or American Registry of Radiologic Technology (ARRT) in Ultrasound within the first 12 months of hire.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification, course accredited by the American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross (ARC) by first day of employment is required.
  • Graduate of a JCERT approved school of Radiologic Sciences Program.

Responsibilities

  • Performs procedures as ordered to obtain sonographic images according to department protocols.
  • Screens and interviews each patient using designated clinical assessment forms to record information.
  • Performs ultrasound procedures to include properly positioning and/or immobilizing patients on the exam table, uses appropriate probes and equipment for the exam, observes patients during scans and monitors, and reviews video displays making the appropriate adjustments to improve picture quality and/or audibility.
  • Reviews, manipulates, and evaluates images to determine the satisfactory diagnostic picture quality and audible sounds.
  • Organizes and accurately performs the individual steps in the sonographic procedures in the proper sequence.
  • Understands and uses Picture Archival Computer System (PACS), Electronic Medical Records (EMR), and other software related to job responsibilities.
  • Performs and documents quality control on equipment according to manufacturer guidelines or department protocols; recognizes and takes action for abnormal results.
  • Reports equipment problems and/or failures to Bio-Med and Manager.
  • Provides a safe and clean environment; ensuring operation of imaging equipment by completing preventive maintenance requirements; following manufacturer's instructions; troubleshooting malfunctions; calling for repairs; maintaining equipment inventories; evaluating new equipment and techniques.
  • Applies and follows radiation safety principles (i.e. ALARA principles) to ensure patient and staff safety.
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision and make independent decisions while maintaining tact, maturity and a positive attitude.
  • Engages in equitable distribution of departmental workloads.
  • Ability to work in variable environments and locations.
  • Performs routine assignments using existing procedures, and has conceptual knowledge of theories, practices, and procedures within a discipline, typically acquired through technical training.
  • Develops competence by performing structured work assignments, and receiving instruction, guidance, and direction from others.
