About The Position

The University of Pennsylvania is seeking a Temporary Veterinary Technician Senior to provide specialized veterinary clinical care primarily for rodent species in ULAR-managed facilities. This role involves assessing animal health, administering medications, maintaining health records, and performing diagnostic tests, all under minimal supervision. The position requires working weekends and holidays, and is essential during emergencies or campus closures.

Requirements

• Graduation from an accredited animal health technology program or equivalent.
• 1-3 years of experience in a research or clinical setting preferred.
• AALAS certification at the Laboratory Animal Technician level or commitment to attain it.
• Ability to lift 50 pounds.
• Computer skills including familiarity with Microsoft Excel and Word programs.
• Ability to work weekends and holidays from 7:30 AM to 4:30 PM.

Responsibilities

• Triage and assess animal health, providing immediate care to emergency cases.
• Administer medications by oral, topical, and injectable routes.
• Maintain animal health records and prepare daily treatment rosters.
• Consult with clinical veterinary staff and laboratory personnel on treatment options.
• Collect specimens and perform diagnostic testing on samples.
• Operate sterilization equipment and prepare surgical instrument packs.
• Perform facility cleaning, maintenance, stocking, and inventory.
• Prepare bills for treatments and medications used to provide clinical care.
• Familiarity with IACUC protocols and assure compliance with approved protocols.
