About The Position

The UI/UX Designer is responsible for defining the visual direction, usability, and overall experience of enterprise applications. This role plays a critical part in ensuring that all user interface designs are intuitive, accessible, and aligned with organizational standards. The UI/UX Designer collaborates closely with Business Analysts, Technical Leads, Developers, and QA to translate business requirements into user‑friendly, visually consistent solutions. This position leads the design of wireframes, mockups, prototypes, and user testing activities to produce high‑quality digital experiences that meet customer needs and comply with the State of Michigan (SOM) Look & Feel Standards and ADA accessibility requirements.

Requirements

  • UI/UX design experience: 3–5+ years
  • Wireframing/prototyping tools (Figma, Sketch, or similar): 2+ years
  • Design systems & reusable components: 2–3+ years
  • Leading user workshops & facilitating sessions: 2+ years
  • Accessibility standards (ADA) familiarity: 1+ year
  • Proficiency with wireframing/prototyping tools (Figma, Sketch, Adobe XD, or equivalent)
  • Experience working with design systems and reusable component libraries
  • Familiarity with information architecture principles
  • Working knowledge of CSS preprocessors (SASS/LESS)
  • Experience conducting usability testing and analyzing feedback
  • Ability to perform A/B testing or other quantitative UX evaluation methods
  • Strong ability to examine user flows, identify pain points, and propose effective design solutions
  • Strong communication and presentation capabilities
  • Ability to collaborate cross‑functionally with both technical and business teams
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to accessibility and usability standards

Nice To Haves

  • Basic understanding of Java or .NET environments (preferred but not required)

Responsibilities

  • Lead the visual design and usability direction of all product interfaces.
  • Analyze user workflows, pain points, and desired outcomes to shape improved user experiences.
  • Create sketches, wireframes, mockups, and high‑fidelity prototypes aligned with SOM Look & Feel and ADA standards.
  • Ensure solutions are scalable, intuitive, and visually consistent across the application.
  • Work directly with project team members—Business Analysts, business owners, architects, developers, tech leads, and QA—to understand functionality and requirements.
  • Partner with the Business Analyst to evaluate existing processes and develop accurate interface designs.
  • Participate in requirement‑gathering meetings, Joint Application Modeling (JAM) sessions, and collaborative workshops.
  • Advocate for end‑user needs throughout the lifecycle of the product.
  • Conduct usability testing and accessibility testing to ensure compliance with UI/UX and ADA standards.
  • Provide developers with guidance on best practices, accessibility requirements, coding standards, and remediation strategies.
  • Ensure full conformance with State of Michigan (SOM) Look & Feel Standards.
  • Present wireframe and design solutions to Business Analysts, Technical Leads, and business stakeholders.
  • Facilitate usability testing sessions and refine designs based on feedback.
  • Serve as a liaison to the DTMB Center for Shared Solutions (CSS) eMichigan team.
