About The Position

The Department of University Center Building Operations at the James R. Connor University Center at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater seeks a UC Facilities Technician (Facilities Technician III, FP031). The Facilities Technician III is responsible for inspecting, maintaining, and repairing specialized equipment and facilities to ensure property meets established standards and to prevent further damage. This position supports the University Center, Drumlin and Esker Dining Halls, and the Moraine Bookstore buildings. General duties include all non-mechanical maintenance, including electrical troubleshooting and repair, while also assisting with construction, design, and operational maintenance as needed. This position reports directly to the UC Facility Services Supervisor and is classified at level 2 for risk of exposure to blood borne pathogens. Work shifts are typically 8 hours, generally Monday–Friday from 6:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., but may vary based on institutional needs. The Facilities Technician III collaborates closely with campus partners including University Housing, Facilities Planning & Management (FP&M), and other stakeholders to ensure building systems and maintenance needs are coordinated effectively across campus.

Requirements

  • H.S. Diploma or equivalent.
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license or obtain one upon appointment.
  • Ability to demonstrate an acceptable degree of skill in the areas listed above.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing with campus stakeholders.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with students, the general public, contractors, and UC-Whitewater staff.
  • Ability to coordinate and collaborate with campus partners such as FP&M, Housing, and Dining to address shared maintenance needs.
  • Ability to maintain a safe and organized work environment.
  • Ability to climb ladders and work above head and shoulders.
  • Ability to lift and carry 50 pounds.
  • Solid understanding of customer service; ability to work creatively to exceed expectations.
  • Physical ability to perform sustained rigorous activity as needed in the areas listed above.
  • Demonstrated aptitude in business computing, competency with Microsoft Office, Google Docs, etc.
  • Ability to interact respectfully with people with diverse socioeconomic, cultural and ethnic backgrounds
  • Willingness and ability to be an active participant in following applicable safety rules and regulations including necessary training and drills

Nice To Haves

  • Grounds equipment operation/maintenance experience.
  • Food service equipment operation/maintenance experience.
  • Electrical maintenance and repair experience (commercial or institutional setting preferred).

Responsibilities

  • Inspects, maintains, and repairs specialized equipment and facilities to ensure property meets established standards and to prevent further damage.
  • Expanded to include carpentry, flooring, painting, wall/ceiling repair, and door/hardware maintenance (e.g., fabrication, installation, and repair of furniture, finishes, and fixtures).
  • Utilizes specialized equipment to repair and maintain complex machinery, equipment, and facility property to prevent further damage and ensure optimal operation. Includes electrical troubleshooting and repair such as lamps, switches, outlets, wiring, and preventive inspections.
  • Performs routine and non-routine facility inspections and monitors cleanliness. Ensures assigned UC facilities, dining halls, and bookstore meet safety and cleanliness standards.
  • Troubleshoots, escalates, and documents issues according to established policies and procedures. Coordinates responses with Housing, FP&M, contractors, and vendors.
  • Supervises and directs student work crews to support daily operations.
  • Provides snow removal and maintains shop equipment and tools.
  • Assists trades, crafts, vendors, and technical staff with construction, design and operational maintenance as needed. Includes drywall, partitions, painting, and finish work, as well as minor electrical installation projects.
  • Collaborates with FP&M, Housing, and other partners to align projects with campus construction and renovation standards while minimizing disruption to operations.
  • Receives, inspects, inventories, and distributes deliveries independently to appropriate entities. Includes ordering supplies, maintaining credit card records, and securing bids as needed.
  • Troubleshoots, escalates, and documents issues according to established policies and procedures. Includes entry and tracking of TMA work orders across UC, dining halls, and bookstore.
  • Communicates project updates and coordinates work with UC leadership, FP&M, Housing, Dining, and other stakeholders to ensure alignment.
