About The Position

The College of Liberal Arts Department of Music seeks a Term Instructor of Piano to join the team on the University of Alaska Troth Yeddha campus in Fairbanks, Alaska. The Department of Music has approximately 50 majors, offering a BA in Music, a BM in Performance, an MB in Music Education, and an MM in Performance. The department is creatively active, with nearly 100 musical events scheduled in a given semester, ongoing community outreach, and a vibrant and diverse student community. The successful candidate will work as a team member within the Music department and the College of Liberal Arts to fulfill a bi-partite workload of teaching and service. To thrive in this role, the applicant should possess experience in teaching in the field of study at the college/university level, as well as experience developing curriculum and teaching materials for various teaching modalities. The ability to work with and instruct students of different backgrounds and with different learning styles is of extreme importance. You will be expected to teach 2-3 courses per semester in Functional Piano and Fundamentals of Music, with the possibility of additional courses in Class Piano, music history, or music theory, depending on the department’s needs, and fulfill various service obligations within the academic year. To thrive in this role, candidates should have a strong interest in teaching and mentoring students in both face-to-face and online modalities. They need to be comfortable with learning and using instructional technologies in their courses. The primary focus of the position will be on accompaniment activities, and the applicant should expect to spend a large portion of time preparing music and rehearsing with students, faculty, and guest artists. Experience and enthusiasm for coaching students collaboratively will help the applicant be successful. In addition, candidates will be part of a small, close-knit department that values teamwork, respect, and mutual support, and need to be comfortable working as an active team member.

Requirements

  • MM Collaborative Piano, Piano Performance, or similar degree
  • Graduate or Teaching Assistant experience of at least two years in piano accompaniment or collaborative piano

Nice To Haves

  • DMA in Collaborative Piano, Piano Performance, or similar degree
  • Experience in teaching piano for non-pianist music majors, accompanying and coaching professionals and students

Responsibilities
