About The Position

Samaritan Daytop Village provides life-changing services in mental health, addiction recovery, housing, and more to help individuals and families across New York rebuild their lives. We serve over 33,000 clients annually at more than 60 locations throughout the five boroughs, as well as Suffolk, Rockland, Sullivan, Westchester, and Ulster Counties. The Tutoring Program Coordinator oversees the operations of the afterschool tutoring academic support initiative within a family shelter setting, ensuring the creation of a safe, supportive, and engaging educational environment for youth. Responsibilities include supervising volunteers, coordinating educational and developmental activities, and fostering strong relationships with participants, their families, and partnering agencies. The tutoring program will run Tuesdays and Thursdays from 3pm-6pm and serve children in grades 5-8 with about 30 participants expected, with the work schedule for this position Tuesdays and Thursdays from 2pm-6pm.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Education, Social Services, Human Services, Youth Development, or a related field or equivalent professional experience
  • At least 2 years of experience in tutoring, teaching or academic support, with experience in working with high-needs or vulnerable populations, such as those experiencing homelessness, strongly preferred
  • Experience supervising or mentoring staff or volunteers, preferably in an academic setting
  • Ability to work with a diverse set of learners and demonstrated ability to build trust and rapport with children and their caregivers
  • Strong organizational skills
  • Strong communication skills both oral and written

Responsibilities

  • Assist in Program Development and Evaluation: Design, implement, and evaluate tutoring sessions and supplementary activities aimed at promoting academic success and comprehensive growth.
  • Volunteer Management: Provide guidance to volunteer tutors to ensure high-quality service delivery.
  • Participant Support and Engagement: Monitor individual progress, assess educational needs, and motivate youth to foster confidence and achievement.
  • Compliance and Safety Assurance: Ensure all program activities adhere to shelter policies, child protection standards, and relevant legal requirements.
  • Stakeholder Communication: Maintain ongoing communication with caregivers, shelter staff, and educational partners to optimize participant outcomes.
  • Operational Administration: Manage instructional resources, document attendance and participation, and prepare progress reports for funders and leadership.
