About The Position

East Side House (ESH), founded in 1891, is a 501(c) (3) organization that has served the South Bronx since 1963. The organization is dedicated to the community and focused on providing resources and opportunities. East Side House has identified that education is the foundation for economic improvement. Our youth education and technology programs teach skills to allow students and clients to become more self-sufficient and independent. As a community resource, the organization also provides services to families and a growing senior population. In 2020 the organization began food distribution as an additional way to provide economic support to the community we serve. Neighborhood Development Area Educational Support Programs provide High School students with the services and support they need to do better in school, enter college or an advanced training program, learn leadership skills and develop conflict resolution/mediation skills. East Side House Settlement is directly responsible for the administration of the Bronx Design and Construction Academy NDA program, which enhances the academic component by offering additional academic support, career and education exploration, work preparation, skills development, and internships. We are seeking a Tutor to provide structured academic support and guidance to our students throughout the school year. The primary role of the Tutor is to help ensure that students meet or exceed grade level standards and expectations within a given subject area. Tutors must be able to motivate and maintain the interest of the students while setting a positive example in all areas, including timeliness, attendance, and professionalism. Additionally, Tutors must take a sincere, active, and appropriate interest in the well-being of all students.

Requirements

  • A commitment to the mission and programs of East Side House
  • Must be enrolled in a college degree program; Bachelor’s or Master’s degree preferred
  • Strong communication skills, both oral and written
  • Ability to create basic lesson plans
  • Must be available to work after school hours (e.g., 3:00 p.m. to 5:30 p.m.- Tues. Wed. and/or Thurs only)
  • Bachelor's degree in education, human services, or related field.
  • Minimum of two years’ experience with youth at risk and/or school setting.
  • Excellent verbal, analytical, writing, communication, organizational skills.
  • Ability to work in a team oriented environment and multi-task.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and time management skills.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of community service/ development.
  • Knowledge and experience in Microsoft Word and other applications.

Nice To Haves

  • Familiarity with Common Core Standards is a huge plus

Responsibilities

  • Work one-on-one and in small groups with students to provide them with academic intervention
  • Partner with Academic Support Team to develop and implement instructional strategies
  • Regularly provide and/or exchange student information with Student Advocates and other program staff, as appropriate
  • Document all tutoring sessions in the Tutor Log, detailing student interactions, achievements, and any potential concerns
  • Periodically administer assessments and collaborate with staff to analyze scores
  • Perform other duties assigned
