About The Position

Connecticut State Community College (CT State) was launched on July 1, 2023, through the consolidation of Connecticut’s 12 community colleges. The College is seeking part-time tutors who are passionate about supporting the academic success of students enrolled in the Second Chance Pell Program. The Part-Time Tutor provides academic support, assists with coursework, strengthens foundational skills, and fosters academic confidence and persistence. Tutors collaborate with faculty and program staff to promote student success in a structured and supportive learning environment. In the Academic Center of Excellence (ACE), the Tutor provides tutorial services to students, in small groups at a Connecticut Department of Correction facility as part of the Second Chance Pell program. Incumbents provide this support in a Connecticut Department of Correction facility in which the classes and tutoring sessions are held.

Requirements

  • Associate degree in the assigned academic field or a closely related field with one (1) or more years of related teaching and/or tutoring experience; or an equivalent combination of experience and training which would lead to the competencies required to carry out the position’s essential duties.
  • Current academic disciplines English & Mathematics
  • Experience in tutoring and basic instruction in the assigned academic discipline.
  • Knowledge of principles and concepts of the assigned academic discipline.
  • Experience supporting students in academic goal setting and career planning.
  • Ability to work effectively with individuals from diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds, including individuals with disabilities
  • Excellent interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Teams)
  • Incumbent must go through a complete Department of Corrections Background check and attend a 3-hour Volunteer, Intern and Professional Partner (VIP) training on safety and security and do a Site Sense orientation for the Department of Correction facility in which they will tutor.

Nice To Haves

  • Ability to provide academic support via video conferencing platforms.
  • Two (2) years of relevant teaching and/or tutoring experience.
  • Bilingual (Spanish).
  • Prior experience using the TutorTrac platform and Blackboard LMS (not all colleges require this experience)

Responsibilities

  • Providing group tutoring.
  • Assisting students in carrying out assignments, including giving supplemental instruction in the academic discipline being applied.
  • Observing and providing information to faculty on student performance and on those requiring special faculty instruction.
