The Tug Boat - Deckhand will be responsible for maintaining the vessel in a state of readiness and assisting with various tasks under the direction of the captain. This includes pulling lines, using equipment, and helping with docking and towing operations.

Requirements

  • Must be able to comprehend, respond, and carry out specific orders from the captain.
  • Ability to communicate effectively.
  • Must possess good communication skills by voice and/or visual hand signals.
  • Ability to learn safety awareness, injury prevention, and firefighting.
  • Follow all company safety practices
  • Must be able to acquire a TWIC
  • Able to lift and carry heavy objects, sometimes over 75 pounds. Must be physically able to pull heavy lines/hoses, lift, tighten winches, carry heavy items, kneel while painting or changing oil/filters, climb onto barges and upstairs to the wheelhouse, bending and twisting during boat/barge tie-up.
  • Adequate hearing is crucial for receiving communications, and good color vision is necessary for navigating and using equipment.
  • Deckhands may need to work in confined spaces, ascend and descend ladders, and be exposed to weather elements. Ability to work in hot or cold temperatures

Responsibilities

  • Maintaining vessel readiness: Keeping the tugboat clean, orderly, and prepared for operations.
  • Handling lines and equipment: Pulling lines, splicing lines, using winches, capstans, and other deck equipment.
  • Assisting with docking and towing: Securing the tugboat during berthing and unberthing, setting up towing rigs, and assisting with towing operations.
  • Performing basic vessel maintenance: Cleaning the deck, cabins, and other areas, and performing simple maintenance tasks on deck machinery.
  • Navigational duties: Standing watch as directed, assisting with navigation, and providing signals.
  • Safety and risk management: Identifying and reporting potential hazards and incidents.
