About The Position

The purpose of this classification is to maintain and repair County-owned trucks and heavy equipment. The position involves performing inspections, routine and complex repairs, preventive maintenance, determining material requirements for projects, and operating various machinery and tools to complete work assignments. Additional duties may be assigned as necessary.

Requirements

• High School Diploma or GED required.
• Vocational training and two years as an automobile technician or four years of experience demonstrating progressive skills in the mechanical repair of vehicles.
• Must possess or obtain, and maintain a valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL).

Nice To Haves

• Two (2) or more Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) current certifications preferred.

Responsibilities

• Inspects and tests truck and heavy equipment systems, including drive train, engine operation, transmission operation, suspension, steering, brakes, electrical system, HVAC and emissions.
• Completes or revises work order for repairs and obtains required parts.
• Performs emission tests per frequency and criteria specified by state law.
• Inspects and tests completed work and updates required records.
• Gathers information from equipment operator reports, fault codes, and other diagnostic data.
• Troubleshoots and diagnoses problems, identifies items needing repair, and completes required repairs.
• Performs preventive maintenance on trucks and heavy equipment, including checking and replacing fluids, draining and replacing oil, and performing tune-ups.
• Determines amount of materials required for projects and assists in monitoring inventory levels.
• Operates or uses various machinery, equipment, power tools, hand tools, and supplies to complete work assignments.
• Maintains basic mechanics tool kit and/or vehicle-specific maintenance tool sets.
• Performs other related duties as assigned.
