About The Position

Big Bend Community College (BBCC), a rural college serving vibrant, culturally rich communities in the Columbia Basin of Central Washington invites applications for an Academic Advisor in the college's TRiO Upward Bound Department.   Join our dynamic team at Big Bend Community College! We are seeking a dedicated individual for a full-time, grant-funded, 12-month position with our renowned Upward Bound Program. This federal TRIO program, funded by the U.S. Department of Education, empowers first-generation and low-income students to develop the skills needed for college enrollment and success.   Since 1967, Big Bend Community College has proudly hosted TRIO Upward Bound, making it the longest-running program of its kind in Washington State. Each year, we impact the lives of 115 high school students from Moses Lake High School, Othello High School, Royal High School, and Warden High School.   Be a part of this historic and transformative program and help shape the future of these bright students!   This is a full-time, 12-month, grant-funded position. This position is dependent upon continued grant funding.     Under the supervision of the TRIO Upward Bound Director, the Academic Advisor will provide vital academic and personal advising to our participants year-round. Your guidance will be crucial in ensuring their successful completion of high school and their journey toward earning a two or four-year college degree. Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college in education, psychology, social work, or a related field.
  • At least two years of experience working with low-income and/or academically disadvantaged youth.
  • Demonstrated commitment to and experience working with individuals from diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds.
  • Must have a valid Washington State driver's license and proof of car insurance.

Nice To Haves

  • Master's degree or higher from a regionally accredited institution in education, counseling, social work or a related field.
  • Experience working in TRIO Programs
  • Spanish language proficiency
  • Bicultural Experience
  • Professional or personal experiences in overcoming barriers similar to program participants.
  • Experience working with high school and/or college students and their parents/families, particularly in advising, teaching, and/or student recruitment.
  • Applicants who share a background similar to that of the target population. 
  • Strong skills in communication-public speaking, facilitating, and interpersonal skills. 

Responsibilities

  • Travel to Othello and Royal High Schools each week during the academic year to provide direct support to students.
  • Actively inform target schools, communities, and potential stakeholders about the exciting services the program offers. Develop strong working relationships with school administrators, counselors, teachers, parents, community agencies, and BBCC personnel to enhance program success. Create and implement a dynamic plan to identify, recruit, select, and retain eligible students within target schools. .
  • Assist students in creating a comprehensive high school and beyond plan, including course selection and academic goal setting. Provide participants with career awareness and planning through engaging interest inventories and related assessments. Offer one-on-one assistance to participants and their parents with college admissions, financial aid, and scholarship applications. 
  • Ensure timely and accurate documentation of student records in both hard copy files and electronic systems.Regularly monitor students' academic progress, attendance, and discipline records, providing necessary interventions to support success. Assist in the planning, delivering, and supervising academic year and summer academy services to enhance student learning experiences.

Collaborate with the TRiO team to innovate, plan, and develop new approaches to services and processes. Plan,coordinate, and participate in monthly Saturday educational, social, and enrichment events and/or workshops that promote college access, enrichment experiences, and life skills.
  • Maintain positive leadership, ethical/professional conduct, and confidentiality of program participant information.
  • Assist in selecting, training, and monitoring TRIO Student Ambassadors.
  • Assist in supervising student activities and events, including field trips, during both academic and summer components.
  • Assist with data collection and the completion of the APR (Annual Performance Report) and federal grant application
  • Assist in evaluating  program services and  perparing federal grant reports and applications.
  • Help maintain the program webpage and all other social media communication outlets to keep the community informed.
  • Maintains professional growth and development through seminars, workshops and professional affiliations
  • Ensures no injuries to self or others by following safe work practices and policies.
  • Ensures compliance with college policies and procedures and state and federal regulations.  
  • Conduct self in a professional manner and ensures the interaction with team members and other support groups is conducted in a courteous and efficient manner conducive to the college's values.
  • Perform related duties and responsibilities as may be required.
  • Provide exceptional customer service to internal and external customers.
  • Communicate effectively orally and in writing, including the ability to engage in one-on-one and in public forum conversations with students, parents, and the public.
  • Use technology, including Excel, Word, Outlook, CANVA, and Google Forms to accomplish daily work.
  • Work independently and reliably. Some hours outside of regular business hours may be required.
  • Maintain a high level of confidentiality.
  • Think critically, problem solve, prioritize, ensure accuracy, and utilize sound judgment to make independent decisions in a variety of situations.
