About The Position

The TRIO SSS STEM Advisor provides comprehensive academic, career, and personal support for eligible students in STEM majors. The Advisor plays a critical role in advancing student persistence, graduation, and transfer to four-year institutions. This position integrates intrusive advising practices with data-driven strategies to identify barriers, guide interventions, and strengthen overall program outcomes. The Advisor also fosters collaboration with faculty, staff, and external partners to ensure TRIO participants in STEM pathways have the resources and opportunities to succeed.Essential Job Functions:

Requirements

Master's degree in college student affairs, student development, or social work preferred, or Bachelor's degree with three years of experience working with low-income, academically disadvantaged populations.
Background in counseling, career development, financial aid, and/or academic advising preferred, with at least three years of experience in a public community college or other higher education institution; prefer prior experience working with TRIO programs.
Demonstrated experience, knowledge, or sensitivity to students from disadvantaged backgrounds.
Knowledge of educational planning, career guidance resources, counseling methodology, and community support agencies that are available to meet individual participants' needs
Ability to work collaboratively with a diverse population of students and staff
Excellent interpersonal, organizational, and presentation skills
Project coordination and management skills

Responsibilities

Recruit, interview, and onboard prospective participants to determine program eligibility.
Develop, implement, and monitor Individualized Student Plans (ISP) based on student goals and identified student needs.
Deliver individualized, intrusive advising in academic planning, course selection, degree audits, transfer preparation, and STEM career exploration.
Assess student needs using intake assessments, surveys, and progress tracking tools; create success plans incorporating academic, financial, and career goals.
Monitor student progress via check-ins, early alerts, and academic performance data; proactively intervene when challenges are identified.
Provide referrals to campus and community resources, including tutoring, counseling, financial aid, and career services.
Support students in developing STEM-specific study strategies, accessing undergraduate research and internships, and preparing for graduate or professional education.
Plan and facilitate STEM-focused workshops, success seminars, and experiential learning activities informed by participation data and student feedback.
Assist students with financial literacy, FAFSA completion, scholarship searches, and financial planning.
Maintain accurate documentation of student contacts, services, and outcomes; ensure compliance with federal TRIO reporting requirements.
Use program data to evaluate effectiveness, recommend evidence-based improvements, and contribute to Annual Performance Reports (APR).
Collaborate with TRIO leadership and colleagues to develop initiatives that promote student engagement, retention, and completion across TRIO programs.
Uphold FERPA guidelines and demonstrate cultural competence when working with diverse student populations.
