About The Position

Under direct supervision, the Tribal Roads Crew Member is responsible for carrying out the objectives of the Washoe Tribe's Transportation Improvement Program; assists with implementation of road projects and field activities; monitors conditions of Tribal roads and facilities; and maintains confidentiality of all privileged information.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED and one year experience working with construction equipment or work that requires physical labor; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Must possess a 10 or 30 hour OSHA certificate.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid California or Nevada driver's license or capable of obtaining one within thirty days (30) of employment.
  • Must be able to be insurable by the Tribe's Driving Policy.
  • Must be able to successfully pass a pre-employment drug/alcohol screen and background investigation.
  • Knowledge of business English, proper spelling, grammar, punctuation, and basic arithmetic.
  • Knowledge of basic construction terms.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in the English language, both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to work with individuals of varying social and cultural backgrounds and with co-workers at all levels.
  • Ability to work under harsh weather and terrain conditions.
  • Ability to properly lift and carry up to fifty (50-100) pounds from one location to another.
  • Ability to be sensitive to Tribal cultural needs of the communities in which the work is performed.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality.

Responsibilities

  • Perform as a member of a cohesive team in physical activities needed to complete road repair, maintenance, and construction projects.
  • Communicate and receive communications effectively through various means (i.e. radios, hand signals, visual, verbal).
  • Communicate and interact with the public in a patient, respectful, and effective manner.
  • Handle equipment such as compactors, rollers, augers, concrete/asphalt saws, water pumps, and multiple hand tools (e.g., sledgehammer, shovel, pick).
  • Construct fencing and anti-erosion measures.
  • Operation of onsite equipment (e.g., backhoe, dump truck, grader).
  • Transport, tow vehicles and trailers, etc.
  • Wear personal protective equipment (gloves, boots, hard hat, eye protection, safety vests) at all times while performing duties on and off Tribal land.
  • Perform duties with a high attention to safety for all crew members and the public.
  • Perform other duties as required.
