About The Position

The Tribal Archivist is responsible for the access to professional care, daily management, and maintenance of the Tribal Archives including its organization, preservation, and storage. This role will refine, implement, and uphold archival policies and procedures regarding processing, documenting, and accessing archival collections. Works closely with the Cultural Resource Management (CRM) team as well as other internal and external stakeholders in support of their programs (including the tribal community) and will work to support various programming efforts related to the Tribe's history and culture.

Requirements

  • Master's degree in Library Sciences, Museum Studies, Anthropology, History, or related field required.
  • Minimum of five (5) years of archives experience required, preferably in a government or museum archives setting.
  • Experience and training in historical and institutional records management and retention, archaeological and ethnographic collections management, curation, and conservation.
  • Experience in the identification of Serrano cultural resources, particularly as they relate to San Manuel.

Nice To Haves

  • Knowledge of professional standards, trends, and legal requirements within the fields of archives and museums science.
  • Experience in indigenous-based collections management.
  • Familiarity with records produced by governments and indigenous communities.
  • Awareness of tribal cultural sensitivity issues and experience in working within and honoring tribal protocols.

Responsibilities

  • Responsible for the maintenance and use of the Tribal Archives, including the creation of scopes and finding aids, collection re-housing and conservation/stabilization, environmental monitoring and controls, movement of collections into new or improved storage conditions, and temporary displays and/or loans.
  • Conducts the acquisition, preservation, organization, cataloging, and digitization of the Tribal Archives, including historical records, photographs, audiovisual materials and cultural objects.
  • Provides subject matter expertise and collaborative assistance to Tribal leaders, CRM staff, and other departments on Serrano history, culture, and protocols.
  • Promotes the Tribal Archives' resources, programs, and services by participating in educational and outreach programming.
  • Assists in the planning and preparation of collection displays and/or exhibits involving materials from the Archives' collections.
  • Prepares and submits proposals, reports, work plans, and other documents associated with the management of the Tribal Archives.
  • Contributes to the management of the department's annual budget as it relates to the Tribal Archives and collections.
  • Stays informed about field advancements to support the mission and strategic objectives of the Tribal Archives through ongoing improvement efforts.
  • Performs other duties as assigned to support the efficient operation of the department.
