About The Position

At Merrifield Garden Center, we strive to provide an unparalleled selection of the highest quality plants and gardening products. We are dedicated to continuous education and sharing our gardening guidance with employees and customers alike. Founded in 1971, Merrifield Garden Center is a family run, full-service garden center, nursery, and landscaping company with two locations in Northern Virginia and an extended family of over 500 employees. We are looking for friendly and knowledgeable plant salespeople to assist customers while they shop for plants and gardening supplies at the garden center. The primary need of this position is for our Trees department, but you will need to be familiar with all of the different types of plants that we carry in the nursery, including trees, shrubs, tropicals, annuals and perennials, and the different types of gardening supplies that we carry, such as soils, mulches and fertilizers. This position will require physical labor, thus you must be able to safely lift up to 75 lbs. You may also be trained to operate a machine to lift heavier items, so you must be 18 years of age or older and a clean driving record is a plus. Some of the primary responsibilities include: Greeting customers, learning what types of plants they are looking for, and making suggestions based on their particular growing environment. Answering plant or gardening questions and guiding them on proper planting and watering procedures. Facilitating the sales process by getting the customer the bar codes they need to take to the cashier, and then having the plants pulled to the loading dock. Helping coordinate deliveries or plantings, and making sure that the plants are pulled to the hold area. Answering customer phone calls and emails. Watering plants and making sure that the nursery is neat and clean. Communicating with fellow sales people, cashiers, loaders and phone operators as part of team to ensure complete customer service and satisfaction. Requirements

Strong customer service and interpersonal skills

Evening and weekend availability are required.

Nice To Haves

A degree in horticulture, landscape design, business management, communications, hospitality or a related field is a plus
