About The Position

The Journeyman/Top Climber position is a full-time, non-exempt role that reports to the Foreperson or General Foreperson. The essential functions of this role include trimming and removing trees by climbing with the aid of various equipment, cutting branches or trunk sections, and assisting the crew lead with obtaining permissions from property owners. The position also involves promoting good customer relations, directing the crew in the absence of the crew lead, and keeping informed about new equipment and safety standards. The role requires the use of appropriate tools for tree felling and trimming, as well as the maintenance of work areas and equipment. The employee will also be responsible for training new employees and ensuring safety practices are followed in the work environment.

Requirements

• Minimum of 2 years’ experience working on tree trimming or clearing crews.
• Basic knowledge of trees, including identification, growth habits, and correct arboricultural techniques.
• Understanding of the American National Standards for Tree Care Operations (ANSI Z133.1-current version).
• Basic knowledge of electrical circuits and ability to read and understand circuit maps.
• Ability to enforce on-the-job safety practices.
• Ability to wear necessary personal protective equipment (PPE).
• Ability to enter and exit a vehicle numerous times per day.
• Ability to withstand exposure to all kinds of weather.
• Ability to write, read, and comprehend written and verbal job instructions/information.
• Ability to communicate professionally with others.
• Ability to lift, move, and maneuver up to 50 pounds infrequently and up to 30 pounds frequently.
• Ability to work long hours and overtime during emergencies.
• Ability to operate and service all required tools and equipment.
• Valid commercial driver’s license and ability to pass a pre-employment drug test.
• Valid medical card to drive company vehicles over 10,001 lb. GVWR or GVW.
• Maintains a herbicide applicator or operator's certification and license as required.
• Valid First-Aid and CPR cards.
• Completion and passing of a Top Climber Performance Review.

Responsibilities

• Trims and/or removes trees using ladders, safety belts, climbing lines, and powered trimmer lift trucks.
• Cuts branches or trunk sections and lowers them to the ground with lines.
• Assists crew lead with obtaining written permission from property owners.
• Promotes and maintains good customer and public relations.
• Directs crew when crew lead is away from the job site.
• Takes on leadership role when appropriate.
• Keeps informed of new equipment and specifications, standards, practices, and operating procedures.
• Uses appropriate tools to fell trees or trim trunks and split them into manageable pieces.
• Sprays stumps and brush with hand-spraying equipment to prevent further growth.
• Loads and unloads trucks with logs, stumps, brush, and debris.
• Repairs slight damage to lawns, fences, and walks caused by tree trimming.
• Relays hand-signals, directs traffic, and operates trucks and equipment as assigned.
• Trains new employees on proper procedures.
• Safeguards employees and public from hazards in and around work area.
• Sets up barriers, warning signs, and flags to protect employees and the public.
• Performs tree and bucket rescue.
• Inspects and maintains tools, trucks, and other work equipment.
• Requests repair or replacement of equipment when necessary.
• Works around hazardous equipment and in close proximity to energized power lines.
• Maintains cleanliness and mechanical order of trucks, chippers, and equipment.
• Reports the need for equipment and truck maintenance to crew lead.
• Performs other related duties as required or assigned.
