About The Position

The Trimmer/Climber Trainee position is a full-time, non-exempt role that reports to the Foreperson or General Foreperson. The essential functions of this role include trimming and removing trees by climbing with the aid of various equipment, cutting branches or trunk sections, and managing the safe lowering of these materials to the ground. The trainee will also be responsible for using appropriate tools to fell trees, spray stumps to prevent further growth, and load/unload trucks with logs and debris. Additional duties include repairing any damage caused during tree trimming, directing traffic, and ensuring the safety of both employees and the public. The position requires training new employees, performing tree and bucket rescues, and maintaining tools and equipment in proper working condition. The role involves working in various weather conditions and around hazardous equipment, necessitating the use of personal protective equipment.

Requirements

  • Minimum of 3 months experience working on tree trimming or clearing crews.
  • Ability to wear necessary personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • Must be able to enter and exit a vehicle numerous times per day.
  • Ability to withstand exposure to all kinds of weather.
  • Must be able to read, write, and comprehend job instructions.
  • Must be able to communicate professionally.
  • Ability to lift, move, and maneuver up to 50 pounds infrequently and 30 pounds frequently.
  • Ability to work long hours and overtime during emergencies.
  • Valid driver's license and ability to pass a pre-employment drug test.
  • Maintains a herbicide applicator or operator's certification as required.
  • Must have valid First-Aid and CPR cards.
  • Must complete and pass a Climber Trainee Performance Review.

Responsibilities

  • Trims and/or removes trees using ladders, safety belts, climbing lines, and powered trimmer lift trucks.
  • Cuts branches or trunk sections and lowers them to the ground safely.
  • Uses tools to fell trees and split trunks into manageable pieces.
  • Sprays stumps and brush to prevent further growth.
  • Loads and unloads trucks with logs, stumps, brush, and debris.
  • Directs traffic and operates trucks and equipment as assigned.
  • Trains new employees on proper procedures.
  • Safeguards employees and the public from hazards.
  • Sets up barriers and warning signs to protect employees and the public.
  • Performs tree and bucket rescues.
  • Inspects and maintains tools and equipment.
  • Reports equipment maintenance needs to crew lead.
  • Enforces on-the-job safety practices.
