The Trimmer/Climber Trainee at Wright Tree Service is responsible for trimming and/or removing trees using various methods including climbing with ladders, safety belts, and powered trimmer lift trucks. The role involves cutting branches or trunk sections and safely lowering them to the ground, using appropriate tools to fell trees or trim trunks, and managing the resulting debris. The trainee will also be responsible for spraying stumps to prevent further growth, loading and unloading trucks, and operating equipment such as wood chippers. The position requires cooperation with customers and public safety officials, as well as the setup of safety barriers and signs. The trainee will also be involved in training new employees and ensuring safety practices are followed in the work area. The role demands working in various weather conditions and around hazardous equipment, while maintaining tools and equipment in good working order.

  • Trim and/or remove trees by climbing with the aid of a ladder, safety belt, climbing line, or powered trimmer lift truck.
  • Cut branches or trunk sections and lower them to the ground safely.
  • Use appropriate tools to fell trees or trim trunks and split them into manageable pieces.
  • Spray stumps and brush with hand-spraying equipment to prevent further growth.
  • Load and unload trucks with logs, stumps, brush, and debris.
  • Feed brush into a wood chipper.
  • Repair slight damage to lawns, fences, and walks caused by tree trimming.
  • Relay hand-signals, direct traffic, and keep trucks and work area clear and orderly.
  • Train new employees on proper procedures.
  • Safeguard employees and the public from hazards in and around the work area.
  • Cooperate with customers, police, and fire departments when blocking streets or driveways.
  • Set up barriers, warning signs, and flags to protect employees and the public.
  • Perform tree and bucket rescue as trained.
  • Inspect and maintain tools, trucks, and other work equipment.
  • Request repair or replacement of equipment when necessary.
  • Work around hazardous equipment and in close proximity to energized power lines.
  • Service truck, chipper, and equipment, maintaining them in a neat and clean order.
  • Report the need for equipment and truck maintenance to crew lead.
  • Perform other related duties as required or assigned.
  • Minimum of 3 months experience working on tree trimming or clearing crews.
  • Ability to enforce on-the-job safety practices.
  • Must be able to wear necessary personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • Ability to enter and exit a vehicle numerous times per day.
  • Ability to withstand exposure to all kinds of weather.
  • Must be able to read, write, and comprehend written and verbal instructions.
  • Must be able to communicate professionally with others.
  • Ability to lift, move, and maneuver up to 50 pounds infrequently and up to 30 pounds frequently.
  • Ability to work long hours and overtime during emergencies.
  • Ability to operate and service all required tools and equipment.
  • Valid driver's license and ability to pass a pre-employment drug test.
  • Maintain a herbicide applicator or operator's certification as required.
  • Must have valid First-Aid and CPR cards.
  • Must complete and pass a Climber Trainee Performance Review.
