About The Position

The Journeyman/Top Climber position is a full-time, non-exempt role that involves trimming and removing trees using various climbing techniques and equipment. The role requires working both from the ground and at heights, utilizing tools such as saws, pruners, and powered trimmer lift trucks. The position also includes responsibilities such as obtaining permission from property owners, promoting good customer relations, directing crew members, and ensuring safety practices are followed. The employee will be responsible for maintaining equipment, training new employees, and performing other related duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Minimum of 2 years’ experience working on tree trimming or clearing crews.
  • Basic knowledge of trees, including identification and growth habits.
  • Understanding of American National Standards for Tree Care Operations (ANSI Z133.1-current version).
  • Basic knowledge of electrical circuits and ability to read circuit maps.
  • Ability to enforce on-the-job safety practices.
  • Ability to wear necessary personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • Ability to enter and exit a vehicle numerous times per day.
  • Ability to withstand exposure to all kinds of weather.
  • Ability to write, read, and comprehend written and verbal instructions.
  • Ability to communicate professionally with others.
  • Ability to lift, move, and maneuver up to 50 pounds infrequently and up to 30 pounds frequently.
  • Ability to work long hours and overtime during emergencies.
  • Valid commercial driver’s license and ability to pass a pre-employment drug test.
  • Valid medical card to drive company vehicles over 10,000 lb. GVWR.
  • Maintains a herbicide applicator or operator's certification as required.
  • Valid First-Aid and CPR cards.
  • Completion and passing of a Top Climber Performance Review.

Responsibilities

  • Trims and/or removes trees by climbing with the aid of a ladder, safety belt, climbing line, or powered trimmer lift truck.
  • Cuts branches or trunk sections and lowers them to the ground with lines.
  • Assists crew lead with obtaining written permission from property owners.
  • Promotes and maintains good customer and public relations.
  • Directs crew when crew lead is away from the job site.
  • Keeps informed of new equipment and operating procedures.
  • Uses appropriate tools to fell trees or trim trunks.
  • Sprays stumps and brush to prevent further growth.
  • Loads and unloads trucks with logs, stumps, brush, and debris.
  • Repairs slight damage to lawns, fences, and walks caused by tree trimming.
  • Relays hand-signals, directs traffic, and keeps work area clear and orderly.
  • Trains new employees on proper procedures.
  • Safeguards employees and public from hazards in and around work area.
  • Sets up barriers and warning signs to protect employees and the public.
  • Performs tree and bucket rescue.
  • Inspects and maintains tools, trucks, and other work equipment.
  • Requests repair or replacement of equipment when necessary.
  • Works around hazardous equipment and in close proximity to energized power lines.
  • Maintains equipment in a neat, clean, and specified mechanical order.
  • Reports the need for equipment and truck maintenance.
