About The Position

The Trimmer/Climber Trainee position is a full-time, non-exempt role that reports to the Foreperson or General Foreperson. The essential functions of this role include trimming and removing trees by climbing with the aid of various equipment, cutting branches or trunk sections, and managing the safe lowering of these materials to the ground. The trainee will also be responsible for using hand-spraying equipment to treat stumps and brush, loading and unloading trucks, and operating wood chippers. Additional responsibilities include repairing minor damage caused by tree trimming, directing traffic, and ensuring the safety of both employees and the public. The role requires training new employees and maintaining tools and equipment in proper working condition. The position involves working in various weather conditions and around hazardous equipment, necessitating the use of personal protective equipment.

Requirements

  • Minimum of 3 months experience working on tree trimming or clearing crews.
  • Ability to enforce on-the-job safety practices.
  • Must be able to wear necessary personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • Ability to enter and exit a vehicle numerous times per day.
  • Must withstand exposure to all weather conditions.
  • Ability to read, write, and comprehend job instructions.
  • Must communicate effectively and represent the company professionally.
  • Ability to lift, move, and maneuver up to 50 pounds infrequently and 30 pounds frequently.
  • Ability to work long hours and overtime during emergencies.
  • Valid driver's license and ability to pass a pre-employment drug test.
  • Maintains herbicide applicator or operator certification as required.
  • Must have valid First-Aid and CPR cards.
  • Must complete and pass a Climber Trainee Performance Review.

Responsibilities

  • Trims and/or removes trees using ladders, safety belts, climbing lines, and powered trimmer lift trucks.
  • Cuts branches or trunk sections and lowers them to the ground safely.
  • Uses appropriate tools to fell trees or trimmed trunks and splits them into manageable pieces.
  • Sprays stumps and brush with hand-spraying equipment to prevent further growth.
  • Loads and unloads trucks with logs, stumps, brush, and debris.
  • Operates wood chipper and maintains a clear work area.
  • Trains new employees on proper procedures.
  • Safeguards employees and the public from hazards in the work area.
  • Sets up barriers and warning signs to protect employees and the public.
  • Performs tree and bucket rescue as trained.
  • Inspects tools and equipment for proper working conditions.
  • Reports equipment maintenance needs to crew lead.
  • Enforces on-the-job safety practices for crew members.
  • Services trucks and equipment, maintaining them in a clean and mechanical order.
