The Trimmer/Climber Trainee position is a full-time, non-exempt role that reports to the Foreperson or General Foreperson. The essential functions of this role include trimming and removing trees by climbing with the aid of a ladder, safety belt, climbing line, or powered trimmer lift truck, as well as working from the ground using saws and pruners. The trainee will be responsible for cutting branches or trunk sections and lowering them to the ground safely. Additional duties include using appropriate tools to fell trees or trimmed trunks, spraying stumps and brush to prevent further growth, and loading and unloading trucks with logs, stumps, brush, and debris. The role also involves repairing slight damage to lawns, fences, and walks caused by tree trimming, directing traffic, and keeping the work area clear and orderly. The trainee will also train new employees on proper procedures and safeguard employees and the public from hazards in the work area. The position requires cooperation with customers, police, and fire departments when blocking streets or driveways, and setting up barriers and warning signs to protect employees and the public. The trainee will be trained to perform tree and bucket rescue and will assume responsibility for the inspection and proper working conditions of tools and equipment. The role requires working around hazardous equipment and in close proximity to energized power lines, as well as exposure to excessive noise and various weather conditions.
