About The Position

The Trimmer/Climber Trainee position is a full-time, non-exempt role that reports to the Foreperson or General Foreperson. The essential functions of this job include trimming and removing trees by climbing with the aid of various equipment, cutting branches or trunk sections, and managing the debris. The role requires the use of appropriate tools to fell trees, spray stumps, and load/unload trucks with logs and brush. The trainee will also be responsible for maintaining safety in the work area, training new employees, and ensuring the proper working conditions of tools and equipment. The position involves working outdoors in various weather conditions and may require working on rough terrain.

Requirements

  • Minimum of 3 months experience working on tree trimming or clearing crews.
  • Ability to enforce on-the-job safety practices.
  • Must be able to wear necessary personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • Ability to enter and exit a vehicle numerous times per day.
  • Must withstand exposure to all kinds of weather while completing work tasks.
  • Ability to read, write, and comprehend written and verbal job instructions/information.
  • Must communicate professionally with others.
  • Ability to lift, move, and maneuver up to 50 pounds infrequently and up to 30 pounds frequently.
  • Ability to work long hours and overtime during emergencies.
  • Ability to operate and service all required tools and equipment.
  • Valid driver's license and ability to pass a pre-employment drug test.
  • Maintains a herbicide applicator or operator's certification and license as required.
  • Must have valid First-Aid and CPR cards.
  • Must complete and pass a Climber Trainee Performance Review.

Responsibilities

  • Trims and/or removes trees by climbing with the aid of a ladder, safety belt, climbing line, or powered trimmer lift truck.
  • Cuts branches or trunk sections and drops or lowers them to the ground with lines.
  • Uses appropriate tools to fell trees or trimmed trunks and splits them into manageable pieces.
  • Sprays stumps and brush with hand-spraying equipment to prevent further growth.
  • Loads and unloads trucks with logs, stumps, brush, and debris.
  • Feeds brush into a wood chipper.
  • Repairs slight damage to lawns, fences, and walks caused by tree trimming.
  • Relays hand-signals, directs traffic, and operates trucks and equipment as assigned.
  • Trains new employees on proper procedures.
  • Safeguards employees and the public from hazards in and around the work area.
  • Sets up barriers, warning signs, and flags to protect employees and the public.
  • Performs tree and bucket rescue.
  • Inspects and maintains tools, trucks, and other work equipment.
  • Reports the need for equipment and truck maintenance to crew lead.
  • Performs other related duties as required or assigned.
