About The Position

The Tree Care Technician position works outdoors In public parks managed by Audubon Nature Institute and Is responsible for health and safety of the trees in the downtown riverfront parks. Routine job tasks include routine pruning and lifting, responding to hazards and broken branches. Monitoring tree health and responding to tree health Issues. Ensuring tree protection during events, maintenance, and other high Impact activities. The position will diagnose and treat tree Issues Including diseases, pests, and nutrient needs. The Tree Care Tech will properly use, maintain, and secure equipment such as chainsaws, power pruners, leaf blowers, and vehicles, and hand tool such as hand saws and pruners. The position works under the supervision of the Landscape Supervisor and may be assigned to support contractors, volunteers, and Interns. The position will support the greater needs of the Park Operations department and will support the general success of the parks as assigned Including proving customer service to all park guests, supporting engagement and education, ensuring the park Is clean and free of trash, and supporting event production and recovery.

Requirements

  • 2+ years in tree care or related field.
  • Ability to identify common pests and diseases.
  • Ability to use handheld tools, such as pruners, loppers, and rakes.
  • Ability to operate and maintain equipment such as blowers, power pruners, and chainsaws.
  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • Strong verbal and interpersonal skills, ability to read and write
  • Ability to operate vehicles such as golf carts and gas-powered utility vehicles
  • Ability to work outdoors in varied weather conditions
  • Ability to engage with a diverse audience
  • Affinity for nature and the outdoors

Nice To Haves

  • Louisiana Arborist License
  • Heavy equipment and lift experience
  • Bachelors degree
  • Computer literacy
  • First aid/CPR training

Responsibilities

  • Physically perform tree care including pruning and mulching. Pruning should follow ISA best practices and should prioritize long-term structural integrity and prioritize the nature state of each species.
  • Conduct hazards assessments and respond based on priority.
  • Support new tree plantings including recommendations on planting and initial care.
  • Identify and treat common plant issues including nutrient needs and responding to environmental stressors.
  • Adhere to safe and proper use of tools, PPE, equipment, and chemicals.
  • Assist in group activities and special projects as needed.
  • Maintain a positive attitude and a strong sense of accountability, fostering a collaborative team environment where everyone feels empowered to contribute.
