About the role Under direct supervision, the DOT Waste Shipper supports waste management and shipping activities in accordance with site procedures and regulatory requirements. This role assists management in ensuring all waste handling, packaging, labeling, documentation, and shipment activities are performed safely, efficiently, and in full compliance with company procedures and applicable contractual, statutory, and regulatory requirements. The DOT Waste Shipper performs assigned tasks to support the proper preparation and transportation of regulated waste materials. Responsibilities may include assisting with waste characterization, packaging, labeling, documentation, and coordination of shipments while maintaining strict adherence to safety, environmental, and transportation regulations. Work assignments may include duties that support one or more functional areas of waste management operations, in addition to other responsibilities as assigned.

Requirements

  • Minimum of one (1) year of experience in radioactive waste management, transportation, or related nuclear waste handling activities.
  • Experience preparing or managing on-site waste shipping manifests and performing waste characterization.
  • Familiarity with Low-Track or similar waste manifesting software.
  • Experience working with disposal site waste profiles and documentation requirements.
  • Basic knowledge of federal and state transportation, environmental, and hazardous waste regulations.
  • Knowledge of nuclear facility operations and regulatory environments.
  • Familiarity with nuclear facility safety requirements, including technical safety requirements, operational processes, and reporting protocols.
  • Proficiency with basic computer applications, including Microsoft Office software.
  • Strong attention to detail with the ability to maintain accurate documentation and regulatory compliance.
  • Basic interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to work effectively within a team environment.
  • Bachelor’s degree (BA/BS) in a related field and a minimum of one (1) year of relevant experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Typical experience for this role ranges from one (1) to four (4) years.
  • Current certification as a DOT Hazardous Materials Shipper (49 CFR).
  • Completion of Shipper Qualification training.
  • Training in DOT 49 CFR Part 172 hazardous materials regulations.
  • IATA Class 7 Radioactive Materials shipping training.
  • Advanced Mixed Waste Shipper Certification training.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain Radiation Worker Training (Radiological Worker I or II).
  • Completion of 40-hour HAZWOPER training with current 8-hour HAZWOPER refresher certification.

Responsibilities

  • Ensure compliance with applicable U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) regulations and all local, state, and federal transportation requirements related to hazardous and radioactive material shipments.
  • Interpret and apply DOT regulations, waste acceptance criteria, and Department of Energy (DOE) orders related to waste transportation and shipment activities.
  • Provide guidance and oversight for the proper loading, handling, segregation, and securement of hazardous and radioactive waste shipments.
  • Determine appropriate container and conveyance marking, labeling, and placarding requirements in accordance with regulatory standards.
  • Calculate radionuclide inventories and other hazardous material quantities for shipment packages and transport conveyances.
  • Determine proper shipping names and classifications for hazardous and radioactive material shipments.
  • Prepare shipping documentation required for the transport of hazardous and radioactive materials and waste.
  • Perform DOT compatibility reviews in support of Waste Management Representatives.
  • Inspect containers and packages to verify condition, labeling, marking, and regulatory compliance prior to shipment.
  • Assist Waste Management Representatives in selecting appropriate containers for waste packaging and transport.
  • Provide guidance on the proper selection of transportation conveyance types based on shipment requirements.
  • Escort shipments when required in accordance with Transportation Safety Document requirements.
  • Prepare and maintain shipment manifests and support transportation documentation.
