About The Position

This position is accountable for the provision of patient care and other activities as permitted by licensure and defined within Credentialing and Privileging documentation (hospital), Credentialing and Scope of Practice (Medical Group), Consultation and Referral Plan (DOPL) or other similar documentation as appropriate. As part of that patient care, this position is accountable to: deliver optimal patient care through effective clinical practice; education of the patient, patient's family, clinical staff, and others; consultation with other healthcare providers; and maintain current knowledge regarding options for optimal patient care and outcomes. Essential Job Summary Our Advanced Practice Providers (APPs) are accountable for the provision of patient care at top of licensure within their scope of practice. The APP is licensed, credentialed and privileged to perform such duties as maintenance and promotion of health and prevention of disease; assessment, diagnosis, treatment, correction, consultation, procedures as outlined by specialty, and referral for health problems; education of the patient, patient's family, clinical staff, and others; prescription or administration of prescription drugs or devices in accordance with a consultation and referral plan; consultation with other healthcare providers; appropriate and timely documentation of clinical care; and continually learning and developing for optimal patient care and outcomes. APPs may also participate in research and utilizes evidence-based practice to promote quality patient care, protocol development, care process model development, and best practice standards for assigned patient population. Job Description This Fellowship is a 12-month opportunity for a Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant to obtain invaluable education and clinical experience in trauma and critical care at Intermountain Medical Center, a level I trauma center located in Murray, Utah. Two Advanced Practice Provider (APP) Fellows will spend the majority of the year with the Trauma Service, a well-established team comprised of trauma surgeons and trauma APPs who have been working collaboratively for over 20 years. Responsibilities include managing trauma patients on the floor and in the Trauma ICU, leading trauma resuscitations and massive transfusion in the trauma bay, completing Emergency Department consultations, and on occasion assisting in the operating room. Additional rotations include Pulmonary Critical Care, Neurosurgery, Neuro-Critical Care, Anesthesia and Orthopedics, as well as elective time. The Fellowship also includes didactic and clinical competencies, and a clinical research project culminating in a presentation and abstract for publication. The Fellows will function under the medical supervision of advanced practice providers and physicians on their respective rotations, gaining independence as the year progresses. Overnight call shifts will constitute a part of the weekly schedule, to offer ample opportunity for clinical experience and high acuity patients. The Fellows will undergo quarterly evaluations with the Program and Medical Directors. The ideal candidates for this position will demonstrate a unique passion for trauma and critical care, will possess a strong work ethic and self-driven approach to learning, and will be capable of becoming a leader who advances the role of APPs in this field.

Requirements

  • The following must be met prior to beginning employment:
  • Current state license as a Physician Assistant (PA) or Nurse Practitioner (APRN) at time of program start.
  • Certification as a Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant.
  • Eligible for state Controlled Substance License II through V.
  • Eligible for Federal DEA Certificate II through V.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification for healthcare providers.
  • Current ACLS Certification
  • Other certification as required (e.g. TNCC, NRP).
  • Ongoing need for employee to see and read information, labels, assess patient needs, operate monitors, identify equipment and supplies.
  • Frequent interactions with patient care providers, patients, and visitors that require employee to verbally communicate as well as hear and understand spoken information, alarms, needs, and issues quickly and accurately, particularly during emergency situations.
  • Manual dexterity of hands and fingers to manipulate complex and delicate equipment with precision and accuracy. This includes frequent computer use and typing for documenting patient care, accessing needed information, medication preparation, etc.
  • Expected to lift and utilize full range of movement to transfer patients. Will also bend to retrieve, lift, and carry supplies and equipment. Typically includes items of varying weights, up to and including heavy items.
  • Need to walk and assist with transporting/ambulating patients and obtaining and distributing supplies and equipment. This includes pushing/pulling gurneys and portable equipment, including heavy items. Often required to navigate crowded and busy rooms (full of equipment, power cords on the floor, etc).
  • May be expected to stand in a stationary position for an extended period of time.
