About The Position

The Transporter role at Saint Marys Campus involves direct patient contact and frequent interaction with various healthcare staff. Responsibilities include safely and efficiently transporting patients, visitors, and patient-related items, providing detailed verbal communication during patient handoffs, and confirming patient identification. The role requires independent functioning as well as teamwork, with knowledge in using a smartphone and managing transport requests via computer or telephone. Transporters are expected to safely operate and disinfect various motorized patient transport equipment, perform wheelchair roundups, and assist patients requiring special equipment like oxygen or IV pumps. The position demands significant physical activity, including standing/walking 10-12 miles per 8-hour shift and frequently pushing/pulling patients up to 200 pounds, occasionally exceeding 350 pounds. Transporters must understand and adhere to medical isolation precautions, protocols, and PPE requirements, and assist with patient transfers using slider boards and ceiling lift slings. They also monitor patients' conditions during transport, recognizing and responding to potential medical emergencies. Working hours are flexible, including days, evenings, overnights, holidays, and weekends with rotating days off, and may require attending meetings or assisting in training new employees. A minimum of 80 hours of on-the-job training is provided to perform basic job functions.

Responsibilities

  • Have direct patient contact and frequent interaction with nurses, radiology techs, desk staff, door attendants, etc.
  • Transport patients, visitors, and patient-related items in a safe and efficient manner.
  • Provide detailed verbal communication to appropriate care team member as part of the handoff during drop off and pick up of patients which includes confirming patient identification.
  • Function independently and as a team member with minimal supervision.
  • Proper input and management of transport requests via computer and/or with General Service dispatch via telephone.
  • Safely operate multiple types of motorized patient transport equipment.
  • Disinfect equipment after each patient use and request maintenance as needed.
  • Perform wheelchair roundups to storage locations or designated floors.
  • Stand and/or walk 10-12 miles per 8-hour shift.
  • Frequently push/pull patients up to 200 pounds and occasionally up to or exceeding 350 pounds.
  • Transport patients who require the use of oxygen, intravenous pumps, wound vacs and/or other special equipment.
  • Use various medical equipment and partner with the healthcare team to ensure patent safety and an oxygen warning card is completed.
  • Understand and adhere to the medical isolation precautions, protocols, and PPE requirements.
  • Confirm medical isolation precautions with Epic information and a member of the patient’s care team.
  • At the direction/assistance from member(s) of the medical care team, frequently perform lateral slide transfers with the use of a slider board and slider sheet to transfer patients to/from beds and/or stretchers.
  • Occasionally assist with hooking up/disconnecting ceiling lift slings.
  • Provide patient and visitor assistance as necessary.
  • Transport critical care patients requiring Nurse and/or Respiratory Therapist accompaniment.
  • Monitor patient’s condition during transport when a patient care staff member is not accompanied.
  • Be aware of the patient’s medical condition while in route.
  • Recognize and monitor changes in the patient’s condition which may require a medical emergency call.
  • Attend meetings outside of normal work schedule (if required).
  • Assist in the training of new employees (if required).
