About The Position

Under general supervision, to transport infants and minor children, juvenile detainees, and county wards by passenger car, van, bus, or other public transportation; to be responsible for their safety and care; and to perform related duties as required. Positions in this classification are found in the Social Services Agency and the Probation Department. Most trips are within the Bay Area Counties; however, some assignments may be throughout the State of California. Transportation Workers are not assigned any counseling functions.

Requirements

  • The equivalent of one year of full-time work experience involving the operation of a motor vehicle or performing work which requires use of a vehicle on the job.
  • Some positions require possession of a certificate of completion in First Aid or Basic Life Support, AND possession of a Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certificate.
  • A good driving record according to the Department of Motor Vehicles negligent operator guidelines, and qualification for automobile insurance.
  • Candidates appointed to positions in this classification in the Probation Department must pass a thorough background investigation. Any felony conviction is disqualifying.
  • Possession of a valid California Driver's License.
  • Some positions require that the applicant possess a valid Class B California Driver's License.
  • General behavior patterns of young children, juveniles.
  • Traffic rules and regulations and safe driving practices.
  • First aid and basic life saving techniques.
  • Operate a passenger automobile, van or bus in a safe and proper manner.
  • Provide articulate information regarding the passenger's behavior and ability to relate during the drive.
  • Supervise children while driving.
  • Schedule trips and appointments efficiently.
  • Exercise prudence and caution in the transportation of juveniles.
  • Maintain security and safety routines.
  • Effectively deal with disturbed youngsters and adolescents.
  • Communicate tactfully and effectively with juveniles.
  • Function effectively under stress and evaluate situations for potential danger.
  • Follow written and oral instructions.
  • Care for infants.
  • Become familiar with the general characteristics and behavior patterns of mentally disordered persons.

Nice To Haves

  • A valid driver’s license and a safe driving record are required.
  • Proven history of taking responsibility to ensure that assigned tasks are completed with care and attention to detail.
  • Understanding of and a commitment to providing exceptional customer service.
  • Demonstrated ability to prioritize, organize, plan and prepare for the successful completion of assignments.
  • Conscientiousness in observing safety practices related to driving and vehicle inspection, and the ability to recognize potential hazards and a track record of taking action to correct them.
  • Ability to set high standards for work product and takes effective action to ensure a high level of service.
  • A desire to work with the targeted youth population in an appropriate and professional manner.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with diverse groups.
