This is a repost. Previous applicants must reapply to be considered. This position is located in NCDOT Division 4 and will serve as a Transportation Worker IV in the Nash County Maintenance Unit. Employee must be able to supervise and train others in equipment operations as well as directing the daily activities of a work crew. Employee will operate various pieces of heavy equipment such as bulldozer, excavator, backhoe, skid steer, tandem dump truck, front end loader, tractor trailer, motor grader, rollers, etc., as needed on the various crews. Work includes setting up work zones, installing traffic control devices, asphalt repair, roadway grading, machining unpaved roads, pavement repair, clearing right of way debris and hazards, assisting with pipe installation and operating a variety of hand and power tools. Work also includes the operation of various equipment as needed on different crews that includes, but is not limited to, asphalt maintainer, asphalt patch truck, tandem dump truck, crack sealing machine, rollers, sweepers, skid steer, and backhoe. Work involves shoveling, raking, sweeping, walking and standing for long periods of time. Employee in this position will be exposed to all types of weather conditions; and steep and uneven terrain. This position responds to emergencies such as snow and ice removal, downed trees, traffic control cleanup, etc. during normal business hours or during emergency call back situations and scheduled night work. May require work during nontraditional work hours including nights, weekends, and holidays. This position is also subject to out-of-town travel during adverse weather or other extreme circumstances. May perform a variety of other duties, as assigned. Employee in this position must have working knowledge of the principals involved in the operation and use of the equipment to which assigned. Ability to perform assigned tasks and to follow oral and written instructions as directed by Supervisor. Ability to withstand extreme weather and terrain conditions while performing duties. Employee must have ability to climb, bend, traverse steep and uneven terrain, and work in extreme temperature conditions. Ability to work in close proximity of high volumes of traffic and heavy construction equipment. Safety toe shoes are required. The selected candidate must be able to legally operate CDL required equipment/trucks with both manual and automatic transmissions at the time of hire or within 360 days of hire date. Either possession of a current Commercial Driver’s License on the date of hire, OR the North Carolina Commercial Driver’s License must be obtained through completion of on-the-job training and all requirements mandated by Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (Federal Registry 49 CFR 383) within 360 days of the date of hire. Pre-employment drug testing is required for this position. As a condition of employment, a release form (ALCDRG-01) and a background statement (ALCDRG-06) must be signed allowing the NCDOT to check with previous employers for the past three years about controlled substances and alcohol testing.
