Posting is for one Transportation Worker IV position located in Sampson County Maintenance. Work will consist of a wide range of progressively responsible maintenance tasks in preventive maintenance, repair and construction of state-maintained roads and roadside features. Position will also serve as lead worker of a highway maintenance crew. Work includes, but is not limited to, installation of traffic & erosion control devices, clearing of right of way, roadway grading, machining unpaved roads, pavement repair, pipe installation or other drainage tasks, snow & ice removal, inspecting contract work and monitoring manual tasks performed. Position will operate various pieces of equipment including bulldozer, excavator, backhoe, skid steer, tandem dump truck, front end loader, tractor trailer, asphalt maintainer, motor grader, roller, and additional pieces of heavy equipment as needed. Employee in this position is expected to perform assigned tasks and follow oral and written instructions as directed by the supervisor. Work requires ability to climb, bend, traverse steep and uneven terrain, and exposure to extreme temperature conditions. Work may include lifting up to 50lbs repeatedly and exerting up 100lbs of force occasionally. Position is subject to emergency callback and may require work during nontraditional work hours including nights, weekends, and holidays. The selected candidate must be able to legally operate CDL required equipment/trucks with both manual and automatic transmissions at the time of hire or within 360 days of hire date. Either possession of a current Commercial Driver’s License on the date of hire, OR the North Carolina Commercial Driver’s License must be obtained through completion of on-the-job training and all requirements mandated by Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (Federal Registry 49 CFR 383) within 360 days of the date of hire. Pre-employment drug testing is required for this position. As a condition of employment, a release form (ALCDRG-01) and a background statement (ALCDRG-06) must be signed allowing the NCDOT to check with previous employers for the past three years about controlled substances and alcohol testing. Safety toe footwear is needed.
