About The Position

This position will function as a Transportation Worker IV in our McDowell County Maintenance Unit. Work will consist of a wide range of progressively responsible maintenance tasks in the preventive maintenance, repair and construction of State Maintained roads and roadside features. This position will also serve as a lead worker of a highway maintenance crew. Responsibilities include installing traffic control and erosion control devices, roadway grading, machining unpaved roads, pavement repair, pipe installation or other drainage tasks, snow removal operations, inspecting contract work and monitoring manual tasks performed and operating heavy equipment. This position will operate various pieces of equipment including bulldozer, excavator, backhoe, skid steer, tandem dump truck, front end loader, tractor trailer, lee boy asphalt maintainer, motor grader, rollers, and other pieces as needed on the various crews. Work will require exposure to all types of weather conditions. Work requires the ability to work on uneven surfaces and slopes. This position is subject to emergency callback and scheduled night work during adverse weather or other circumstances.

Requirements

  • Experience in the operation of at least 2 pieces of heavy equipment such as backhoe, tandem dump truck, motor grader, front end loader, forklift, force feed loader, asphalt distributor, asphalt patcher crack sealing machine, track excavators, skid steer or sweeper
  • Knowledge of intermediate Work Zone Safety & NCDOT Workplace Safety policy and practices
  • Experience in shoulder and ditch maintenance, pipe installation or asphalt patching
  • Demonstrated ability to supervise and train others in equipment operations
  • Experience in snow and ice removal operations
  • High school or General Educational Development diploma and six years of experience operating equipment directly related to the area of specialization, or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Possession of a current Commercial Driver's License on the date of hire, or the North Carolina Commercial Driver's License must be obtained within 360 days of hire
