About The Position

This position with NCDOT offers full State Benefits, competitive salaries and many career development opportunities. The posting is for two Transportation Worker IV Positions located in Montgomery County Maintenance. Positions 60020427 and 60020442 will be filled from this posting. You only have to apply once to be considered for both positions. Work will consist of a wide range of progressively responsible maintenance tasks in preventive maintenance, repair and construction of state-maintained roads and roadside features. The position will also serve as lead worker of a highway maintenance crew. Work includes, but is not limited to, installation of traffic & erosion control devices, clearing of right of way, roadway grading, machining unpaved roads, pavement repair, pipe installation or other drainage tasks, inspecting contract work and monitoring manual tasks performed. The position will operate various pieces of equipment including bulldozer, excavator, backhoe, skid steer, tandem dump truck, front end loader, tractor trailer, asphalt maintainer, motor grader, roller, and additional pieces of heavy equipment as needed. Employees in this position are expected to perform assigned tasks and follow oral and written instructions as directed by the supervisor. Work requires the ability to climb, bend, traverse steep and uneven terrain, and exposure to extreme temperature conditions. Work may include lifting up to 50lbs repeatedly and exerting up to 100lbs of force occasionally. The position is subject to emergency call back and may require work during nontraditional work hours including nights, weekends, and holidays.

Requirements

  • High school or General Educational Development diploma.
  • Six years of experience operating equipment directly related to the area of specialization; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Knowledge of Intermediate Work Zone Safety & NCDOT Workplace Safety policy and practices.
  • Experience in shoulder and ditch maintenance, pipe installation, or asphalt patching.
  • Demonstrated ability to supervise and train others in equipment operations and direct daily activities of a work crew.
  • Experience in snow and ice removal operations.
  • Working knowledge of standard road maintenance and construction procedures.
  • Possession of a valid North Carolina Class A Commercial Driver's License or ability to obtain it within 360 days of hire.
