The role is specifically for a Transportation Worker IV in the Division 3 Duplin County Maintenance Unit. The selected workers will be expected to traverse steep and uneven terrain, work in extreme temperature conditions, and perform manual labor road maintenance duties, along with other assigned tasks. Workers in this position will act upon both verbal and written communication to successfully complete their assigned tasks. The work will consist of a wide range of progressively responsible maintenance tasks in the preventive maintenance, repair, and construction of state-maintained roads and roadside features. This position will serve as a lead worker of a highway maintenance crew, requiring the ability to carry out complete oral and written instructions. Responsibilities include installing traffic and erosion control devices, operating a variety of hand and power tools, clearing right of way, performing preventive maintenance and repairs to pavements, shoulder maintenance, pipe installation, or other drainage tasks. Additionally, workers will be responsible for inventorying and tracking quantities of materials used, performing manual labor tasks, and operating assigned heavy equipment. The physical demands of the job include lifting up to 80 lbs repeatedly, walking and standing for long periods, shoveling, raking, and sweeping. Employees will be expected to work in all types of weather conditions and may be subject to emergency call back, scheduled night work, and out-of-town travel during adverse weather or other extreme circumstances. Knowledge, skills, and abilities required for this position include a working knowledge of standard road maintenance and construction procedures, knowledge of intermediate work zone safety and NCDOT workplace safety policies and practices, and the ability to supervise and train others in equipment operations while directing the daily activities of a work crew. Experience in shoulder and ditch maintenance, pipe installation, or asphalt patching, as well as the operation of at least two pieces of heavy equipment, is also necessary.
