About The Position

This position will function as a Transportation Worker III in the Onslow County Maintenance Unit. On a regular and recurring basis, employee operates at least 2 pieces of equipment (backhoe, tandem dump truck, motor grader, front end loader, forklift, force feed loader, asphalt distributor, asphalt patcher, crack sealing machine, track excavators, skid steer, or sweeper) in performing semi-skilled and skilled maintenance tasks such as hauling asphalt, aggregate or soil materials, plowing snow, spreading salt, compacting asphalt, compacting embankments, sweeping roads, loading ditching material, and disposing of roadside debris. Transportation Worker III may train and operate equipment associated with a higher-level position. This position is subject to emergency callback and scheduled night work during adverse weather or other extreme circumstances.

Requirements

  • High school or General Educational Development diploma and five years of experience operating equipment directly related to the area of specialization; or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Ability to act upon both verbal and written communications
  • Safety-toed shoes required
  • Skill in the safe use & care of assigned equipment, hand & power tools
  • Perform manual maintenance duties
  • Ability to traverse steep & uneven terrain
  • Ability to lift 50 lbs.
  • Ability to work in extreme temperature conditions
  • Legally operate a motor vehicle
  • Valid North Carolina Class A Commercial Driver’s License with Tanker (N) endorsement (or obtained through completion of on-the-job training and all requirements mandated by Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (Federal Registry 49 CFR 383) within 360 days of the date of hire)
  • Pre-employment drug testing will be required
  • Completion and signing of release form (ALCDRG-01) and a background statement (ALCDRG-06) allowing the NCDOT to check with previous employers for the past three years about controlled substance and alcohol testing

Nice To Haves

  • Working knowledge of Intermediate Work Zone Safety and NCDOT Workplace Safety policy and practices
  • Experience in one of the following: shoulder and ditch maintenance, pipe installation, or asphalt patching
  • Demonstrated ability to supervise and train others in equipment operations, as well as directing the daily activities of a work crew
  • Experience in snow and ice removal operations
  • Experience in the operation of at least 2 pieces of the following equipment: backhoe, tandem dump truck, motor grader, front end loader, forklift, force feed loader, asphalt distributor, asphalt patcher, crack sealing machine, track excavators, skid steer, or sweeper
