About The Position

This posting is for a Transportation Worker III in the Robeson County Maintenance Unit. Work will consist of a wide range of progressively responsible maintenance tasks in the preventive maintenance, repair and construction of State Maintained roads and road features. Work will include pipe installation, shoulder and ditch maintenance, asphalt pavement repair, installation of traffic control devices, installation of erosion control devices, operating various pieces of construction equipment, hand and power tools. This position will also respond to emergency response situations including traffic accidents, snow and ice removal and other emergencies as they occur. This position will operate equipment such as a backhoe, track hoe, track loader, skid steer and dump truck. Candidate will be subject to extreme environmental conditions, in addition to hazards at highway construction sites, including heavy equipment and highway traffic. Additional Expectations: Position requires work during any adverse weather such as snow and/or ice, tornadoes, hurricanes, etc. which can lead to working extended daily hours, weekends, and holidays. The selected candidate must be able to legally operate CDL required equipment/trucks with both manual and automatic transmissions at the time of hire or within 360 days of hire date. Either possession of a current Class A Commercial Driver’s License with N endorsement on the date of hire, OR the North Carolina Commercial Driver’s License must be obtained through completion of on-the-job training and all requirements mandated by Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (Federal Registry 49 CFR 383) within 360 days of the date of hire. Pre-employment drug testing required. As a condition of employment, a release form (ALCDRG-01) and a background statement (ALCDRG-06) must be completed and signed allowing the NCDOT to check with previous employers for the past three years about controlled substances and alcohol testing. Offer of employment will be contingent upon successful completion of NCDOT post offer employment evaluation.

Requirements

  • High school or General Educational Development diploma and (5) five years of experience operating equipment directly related to the area of specialization; or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Either possession of a current Commercial Driver’s License on the date of hire, OR the North Carolina Commercial Driver’s License must be obtained through completion of on-the-job training and all requirements mandated by Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (Federal Registry 49 CFR 383) within 360 days of the date of hire

Nice To Haves

  • Knowledge of Intermediate Work Zone Safety and NCDOT Workplace Safety policy and practices.
  • Experience in one of the following: shoulder and ditch maintenance, pipe installation or asphalt patching.
  • Demonstrated ability to supervise and train others in equipment operations as well as directing the daily activities of a work crew.
  • Experience in snow and ice removal operations.
  • Experience in the operation of at least 2 pieces of the following equipment: backhoe, tandem dump truck, motor grader, front end loader, forklift, force feed loader, asphalt distributor, asphalt patcher, crack sealing machine, track excavators, skid steer or sweeper.
