About The Position

Work will consist of a wide range of progressively responsible maintenance tasks in the preventive maintenance, repair and construction of State maintained roads. Responsibilities include installing traffic control, pavement repair, snow removal operations, inspecting contract work and operating heavy equipment. This position will operate various pieces of equipment including, tandem dump truck, quad dump truck, front end loader, tractor trailer, rollers, and other pieces as needed on the various crews, performing semi-skilled and skilled maintenance tasks, such as hauling asphalt, aggregate or soil materials; snow and ice operations; compacting asphalt, compacting embankments, sweeping roads; loading ditching material; and disposing of roadside debris. Candidate hired for this position is expected to have a working knowledge of the principals involved in the operation and use of the equipment to which they are assigned. Manual labor includes, but is not limited to operating chain saws, shoveling, driving trucks, and litter pickup. Additional work includes installing traffic and erosion control devices, drainage/ditch maintenance, pipe and drainage structure installation, and flagging operations. Candidate in this position is expected to perform assigned tasks and follow oral and written instructions as directed by supervisor. Additional Expectations: Work requires ability to climb, bend, traverse steep and uneven terrain, and exposure to extreme temperature conditions. Work may include lifting up to 50lbs repeatedly and exerting up 100lbs of force occasionally. Position is subject to emergency callback and may require work during nontraditional work hours including nights, weekends, and holidays. The selected applicant will be expected to legally operate a motor vehicle and have a valid North Carolina Class A Commercial Driver’s License. Either possession of a current Commercial Driver’s License on the date of hire, OR the North Carolina Class A Commercial Driver’s License must be obtained through completion of on-the-job training and all requirements mandated by Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (Federal Registry 49 CFR 383) within 360 days of the date of hire. Release forms ALCDRG-01 and ALCDRG-06 must be signed allowing NCDOT to check with previous employers for the past three years about controlled substances and alcohol. Safety toe footwear required. Offer of employment will be contingent upon successful completion of NCDOT post offer employment evaluation.

Requirements

  • High school or General Educational Development diploma and (3) three years of experience operating equipment directly related to the field of specialization; or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Either possession of a current Commercial Driver’s License on the date of hire, OR the North Carolina Commercial Driver’s License must be obtained through completion of on-the-job training and all requirements mandated by Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (Federal Registry 49 CFR 383) within 360 days of the date of hire.
  • Release forms ALCDRG-01 and ALCDRG-06 must be signed allowing NCDOT to check with previous employers for the past three years about controlled substances and alcohol.
  • Safety toe footwear required.
  • Offer of employment will be contingent upon successful completion of NCDOT post offer employment evaluation.

Nice To Haves

  • Working knowledge of standard road maintenance and construction procedures.
  • Knowledge of Work Zone Safety and Workplace safety policies.
  • Experience in the operation of at least 2 pieces of the following equipment: backhoe, tandem dump truck, motor grader, front end loader, forklift, force feed loader, asphalt distributor, asphalt patcher, crack sealing machine, track excavators, skid steer or sweeper.
  • Experience in snow and ice removal operations
  • Experience in one of the following: shoulder and ditch maintenance, pipe installation, or asphalt patching.
